Subject: I am born again, and it's so easy to explain a child can understand. I didn't realize it was a foreign concept to some people until Jimmy Carter ran for president. Anyway, it's a big concept in Baptist churches. Here's the idea: You are born. You grow up. Being the human that you are, you do bad things like throws rocks through windows, put spiders on your sister, spit on yourself and tell your parents your sister spit on you and then let her take the whippin' you deserved and not say anything. Take Playboy magazines out of the drugstore. Purely hypothetical stuff like that. They're called sins. One day, the preacher pulls up in his station wagon and you talk. He makes you realize you've been bad. You feel bad. He says don't feel bad. We all sin and we all can receive redemption for sin through Jesus. He died on the cross and took the punishment for our sins in our place because he loved us that much. All you have to do his accept his gift of grace. The outward sign of that is a Baptism. You are immersed in water just as John the Baptist immersed Jesus in the water. When you emerge from the water, you are (very temporarily in my case) without sin again. You're an innocent again. You are BORN AGAIN. It doesn't mean you'll never sin again. (At least for me). But it does mean you have accepted Jesus' redemption. That what Baptists and evangelicals mean when they say they are BORN AGAIN. farmer
