I love that! Thanks for posting the link.
Another dog-solider related story - I have a nephew who is in Afghanistan and his camp has had some local dogs (I think he said there were six to start) that have adopted them (and vice versa). The dogs have become very protective of the troops, warning them when someone is approaching camp and even going out on patrols with the guys. Unfortunately, there is not enough food for the dogs so family and friends have been including dog food and treats and toys along with our care packages. One of the dogs had puppies about a month ago. He keeps talking about bringing one of them home when he gets his leave.

Back during the Gulf War, in 1991, we fostered two dogs whose "daddies" were called up. One we had for several months and the other for only two months, until the soldier's parents could make a trip here from Arizona to take the pup home with them.
Right now, neighbors a few doors down who have two springer spaniels and they are fostering two more springer spaniels, whose owners are in Iraq. It took some pull from neighbors to get the Home Owners Association to fudge with the rules and allow four dogs in one house, but they did accept the temporary arrangement and we all love to visit with the four identical dogs, when Mike and Chris have them out for their daily walks.
For anyone who might be interested in fostering for a pet of a soldier, there is now a real program going. I just saw it on the web Wednesday. I'll find the URL and post it here.
