Whenever there's any activity heading toward the Gulf, we always check in with him. Down the right side of the blog, there are clicks for the tracking maps, etc.
Our lawn and garden are really looking forward to the rain. If the path and wind stay the same, it shouldn't get too dirty up our way.
Dolly is a storm we could all learn from. It is still a tropical storm, and not being spoken about much... but if it were to strengthen suddenly, which is not out of the question, there would be no time for a real evacuation, even in this day and age, as it is already nighttime and most people are turning in. It's very close though, so it might have time to become a moderate hurricane right as it hits.
There is little wind shear in the storm, sea surface temperatures are very warm and it has good outflow. If the storm stalled a bit, it could grow into a monster, but I think it's moving too fast to deepen quite that much.
The best forecast as of now for landfall is around Brownsville, Texas as a category 2, with extensive flooding and stormy winds inland of Texas and Mexico.
I also don't think communities are much better prepared for a strong hurricane anymore than they were during the Katrina-era or the previous decade with Andrew. All that outrage with New Orleans, and if another Katrina-type storm hit there, the levies would break again, after 3 years of time to fix them. And this is not out of the question since the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season has already set new records with Bertha, etc.
