In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I was born & lived in the UK until I was 7. I remember Armistice Day & getting a poppy to pin to the lapel of out coats. Both of my grandfathers fought in WWII & both were injured, one was a POW. I'm not sure about relatives fighting in WWI. I'll have to ask my mom about that. Thanks for posting the poem.

  • Here in the States when I was a child I remember we used to get a red poppy for something and people would pin them on their lapel but I can't for the life of me remember what it was for, I do remember the term Armistace Day but never really knew what that meant... I was quite young. Any one know? Maybe we celebrated the Canadian holiday???? Hope this doesn't sound stupid... oh well... too late. lol .............. OT
