Additional Comments: I checked in with Neil Young's website, because I wanted to see if there was any reference to the election, and found this article by Michael Moore. Personally, I like Michael Moore, so I'm posting this in case anyone is interested in reading it.

TO MY CONSERVATIVE BROTHERS AND SISTERS by Michael Moore

I know you are dismayed and disheartened at the results of last week's election. You're worried that the country is heading toward a very bad place you don't want it to go. Your 12-year Republican Revolution has ended with so much yet to do, so many promises left unfulfilled. You are in a funk, and I understand.

Well, cheer up, my friends! Do not despair. I have good news for you. I, and the millions of others who are now in charge with our Democratic Congress, have a pledge we would like to make to you, a list of promises that we offer you because we value you as our fellow Americans. You deserve to know what we plan to do with our newfound power -- and, to be specific, what we will do to you and for you.

Thus, here is our Liberal's Pledge to Disheartened Conservatives:

Dear Conservatives and Republicans,

I, and my fellow signatories, hereby make these promises to you:

1. We will always respect you for your conservative beliefs. We will never, ever, call you "unpatriotic" simply because you disagree with us. In fact, we encourage you to dissent and disagree with us.

2. We will let you marry whomever you want, even when some of us consider your behavior to be "different" or "immoral." Who you marry is none of our business. Love and be in love -- it's a wonderful gift.

3. We will not spend your grandchildren's money on our personal whims or to enrich our friends. It's your checkbook, too, and we will balance it for you.

4. When we soon bring our sons and daughters home from Iraq, we will bring your sons and daughters home, too. They deserve to live. We promise never to send your kids off to war based on either a mistake or a lie.

5. When we make America the last Western democracy to have universal health coverage, and all Americans are able to get help when they fall ill, we promise that you, too, will be able to see a doctor, regardless of your ability to pay. And when stem cell research delivers treatments and cures for diseases that affect you and your loved ones, we'll make sure those advances are available to you and your family, too.

6. Even though you have opposed environmental regulation, when we clean up our air and water, we, the Democratic majority, will let you, too, breathe the cleaner air and drink the purer water.

7. Should a mass murderer ever kill 3,000 people on our soil, we will devote every single resource to tracking him down and bringing him to justice. Immediately. We will protect you.

8. We will never stick our nose in your bedroom or your womb. What you do there as consenting adults is your business. We will continue to count your age from the moment you were born, not the moment you were conceived.

9. We will not take away your hunting guns. If you need an automatic weapon or a handgun to kill a bird or a deer, then you really aren't much of a hunter and you should, perhaps, pick up another sport. We will make our streets and schools as free as we can from these weapons and we will protect your children just as we would protect ours.

10. When we raise the minimum wage, we will pay you -- and your employees -- that new wage, too. When women are finally paid what men make, we will pay conservative women that wage, too.

11. We will respect your religious beliefs, even when you don't put those beliefs into practice. In fact, we will actively seek to promote your most radical religious beliefs ("Blessed are the poor," "Blessed are the peacemakers," "Love your enemies," "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God," and "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me."). We will let people in other countries know that God doesn't just bless America, he blesses everyone. We will discourage religious intolerance and fanaticism -- starting with the fanaticism here at home, thus setting a good example for the rest of the world.

12. We will not tolerate politicians who are corrupt and who are bought and paid for by the rich. We will go after any elected leader who puts him or herself ahead of the people. And we promise you we will go after the corrupt politicians on our side FIRST. If we fail to do this, we need you to call us on it. Simply because we are in power does not give us the right to turn our heads the other way when our party goes astray. Please perform this important duty as the loyal opposition.

I promise all of the above to you because this is your country, too. You are every bit as American as we are. We are all in this together. We sink or swim as one. Thank you for your years of service to this country and for giving us the opportunity to see if we can make things a bit better for our 300 million fellow Americans -- and for the rest of the world.

I've never been a fan of Michael Moore. I think he makes documentaries with so many holes you could drive a Mack Truck through them.

However, I've also never bought this notion he's the equivalent of Ann Coulter or Rush Limbaugh for the left. No one even comes to mind on the left to match their dogged, ongoing thirst for bile.

  • Yeah, I agree with you, Farmer! I don't see how anyone could equate Michael Moore with Anne Coulter or Rush Limbaugh, there's just no comparison. I didn't want to get into it with the poster below, because I didn't post this article to get into a debate with anyone. I have enough stress in my life, I don't need to come here and get into petty arguments! But I'm with you 100%.............nina

Quite a tall order for any administration.  Mr. Moore must still be drunk on post election euphoria.

  • It sure is a tall order, San Jose! I have to admire his enthusiasm, though. I'm so glad Obama won the election, but I think he has ALOT to prove now, with the expectations being so high. At least we know we'll be in better hands than we were during the last 8 years. We can only go up from here..........nina

Oh really? Was Michael Moore elected as President? No? Is he in charge? No? Then what power does he have to wield?  Geez, talk about delusions of grandeur. Somebody should take him to one side and have a little chat with him, remind him that there is no need to gloat - it is unseemly and smug. He is, in effect, accusing average Republican voters of doing all those terrible things he listed to other Americans. This is not true, but he seems to be the only one who is not able to separate the misdeeds of the Bush Administration from the citizenship of the country. If this is the new rule, the next time Obama makes a mistake we'll blame Michael Moore, personally.

Moore's problem is that he is now irrelvant. With Bush and Cheney gone, along with most of the Republican congress, and Corporate America on its knees, who has he left to skewer? Don't hold your breath waiting for him to be even slightly critical of the Obama presidency.

  • So true. On another note, If MM thinks that Barack Obama's presidency is going to be infallible or without it's own mishaps, than he's more 'out there' than I ever gave him credit for. It's easy for one to sit in the spectator seats and think that he's got all the answers and solutions to everything, but it's not so easy when you're the one making the big decisions. Yes, the Bush adminstration had it's fill of challenges and mistakes and guess what, Michael Moore.....so will Obama's. He doesn't walk on water and he doesn't have all the answers.
  • I think he means *WE THE PEOPLE* which is something that has been very much missed in this current Bush administration! ~~
  • I definitely agree with you that MM is being a bit too optimistic about Obama's presidency, in that there won't be enough money for Obama to fulfill all of his campaign promises, now that Bush has put us into debt, and the economy is collapsing around us. That's a given! As far as his saying that we're in control, I think what he meant by that is that we will hold our Democratic leaders accountable, and if they start doing things that aren't in the best interests of the people, and they are as corrupt as Bush and his administration are, they'll be hearing from us. That's the way it should be. We all need to stand up and speak out if the leaders of our country are doing us, and/or the rest of the world wrong, be they Republicans or Democrats. That's what true patriotism is, and that's how you get good government. You don't get it by sticking your head in the sand, and blaming the other guy. Anyway, that's the way I interpreted it.........nina
  • Nina, you are reading into Moore's 'I am in charge now' statement what you want to believe. Take off your rose colored glasses and you will see that arrogance lives on both sides of the political fence. Michael Moore, just like Rush and Ann Coulter, is positive proof of that.
  • well, guess I'm one of those eeeeevil Republican voters who is responsible for this mess of a nation. I'm so relieved that Moore is showing me some mercy after my shameful actions and I, too can be included in this perfect new world order, hehe.
  • Republican voters aren't evil, that's Bush you're thinking of...........nina
