Topic: To Rose Bush: Sunline is gravely ill

Additional Comments:

I have received word that the great Australian racemare Sunline is gravely ill with laminitis.  I HATE that disease.

Sunline won 32 of 48 starts, and was a phenom during her racing days.  I, as an American, was a big fan of her.

My fingers are crosssed for a miracle.  And it will take a miracle.

Joly, here is a heart-warming story about a lovely mare named Decency. Get a box of tissues ready and read on...

  • Awesome story! Thanks for posting it, Rose Bush! She has some good ancestors--Fappiano, Seattle Slew, Sir Tristam, Sham. Thank God someone took a look at her and got that feeling. eom/Joly

Joly, it looks like she is improving. This news comes from New Zealand, where she lives:

Media reports on Saturday that New Zealand-bred mare Sunline (NZ), who dominated racing around 1999/2000, was under a serious life threatening laminitis problem have been exgaggerated according to her vet Ivan Bridge.

Sunline, who made inducted into the Australian Hall Of Fame in 2002 following her epic race track career, was reported to be having complications following surgery for colic earlier this year, and that she is suffering from laminitis that might have required a decison on her ongoing well-being.

However, Bridge, speaking on New Zealand NewsTalkZB Radio - newstalkzb.co.nz - on Saturday, said that Sunline's conditon was improving, and that her condition had, in fact, been much worse some six weeks ago.

Bridge said that international experts on the conditon, which can cause a horse to founder and ulimately lead to being put down, had been consulted, and the mare was recovering.

Sunline, 13, by Desert Sun out of Songline, was bred by Susan Archer and Michael Martin. She was twice the Australian Horse Of The Year and she campaigned in New Zealand, Australia, Dubai and Hong Kong.

She won the WFA WS Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley twice, in 1999 and 2000, as a four and five -year-old respectively, and she was second the following year to Northerly. Her 1999 winning time of 2.05.40 has not been surpassed since.

Sunline won 32 of 48 starts in her career spanning 1998 to 2002. Her victories included the two Cox Plates, and a Group I Hong Kong International Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin, and two Group I Doncaster Handicaps over 1600m at Randwick in 1999 and 2002. I

In the latter she carried 58kg defeating Shogun Lodge and Defier, such was her racing ability. She earned stakes of $11.3 million.

  • She's not out of the woods yet, but it's promising. I would hate to see her die so young, yet I don't want her to suffer. eom/Jolypha

Joly, I gave RoseB a ''heads up''  on your topic.  I haven't read the article yet.  How old is the mare?

  • Sunline is only 13, and the disease came on after surgery for colic, which was back in July. She is in my top 10 favorite race horses. eom/Jolypha

  • I'm pretty good, and very busy these days--got certified in scuba; became a volunteer for the Alzheimer's Association of Indiana; have a job; I work on fixing up a home my friends bought last spring. Now I am going out in this yucky cold weather to get some groceries. Ugh. How have you been? eom/Jolypha
  • Gee, Joly! Western Indiana always has the best weather. ;>) So. How did that courthouse in Winchester (?) turn out ? Were you all able to save it?........Keep warm. Snow may be coming......Kate
  • the courthouse is saved, but they will add-on to it. The inside is terrible, though. The ceilings in the Clerk's office are exposed! It's not healthy. eom/Joly
  • I am great. My husband and I moved from Georgia to Ohio almost 2 years ago and are really happy with the move. We bought an old Tudor house and did a ton of renovations to it, so I know how hard you're working on that house! I just got PRK (laser vision correction) a few days ago so I'm not seeing well right now (it takes a while for the vision to stabilize). But I am trying to check a few topics here and there. Glad to hear from you. Take care. ~i&b
