You know, in all my years, I've not generally had too many bad trips to the hairdresser. My hair is straight (so I get perms) and mousy dirty blonde (so I get highlights) and it's still never been too bad. Until today.
Needed a haircut, but once I made the appointment, my hair started to look great! (Does that happen to anyone else?) But I went ahead for the appointment, and said - I'm willing to try something new, just not too short. Well. It's too short. I've decided I can live with the length (on the sides) - not that I have any choice. But the back ... OY! What what she thinking! It's shaved up, like a wedge. It looks terrible! I want to cry :o(
And to make it even better, I'm starting to look for a new job, and one of my dearest, oldest friends is coming to town to visit (first time in about 5 years) and I'm going to look horrible :o(
Please tell me if it happened to you, and how you lived through it. Personally I came home & had some wine ... and I'm just not going to look in the mirror for a while.
(BTW, I know that, in the grand scheme of things, it's no huge tragedy. I just really, really hate it.)

On another note......it is pretty common for me to go and have my hair "blown out" or styled in a specific way if I am going to a party or event. And sometimes just for date night! It looks soooooo much better when someone else does it. And I really like doing "period" styles for different dresses that I have found at vintage stores. (very Jana ish. Except I like the 70's too) Unfortunately, unless I book ahead, there is no way I am going to get in to my regular salon full of serious pros. So I have gone to Super Cuts a few times. No scissors involved. The price was great, but the blow out was usually not very good. And forget about updos etc. They have a put your name on the list system there. Well, one time I got this Asian guy that could barely speak English. Not really an issue in this case. Right away at the shampoo bowl I was getting a bad feeling. And so was he!!!! He went through the motions. And you could feel the dread in the air. From both of us. I am not one to confront situations and am usually overly wary of hurting people's feelings. We could both tell he had NEVER done this before. Can you believe it? He got started, randomly blowing my hair and I finally said something. He offered to get someone else and I had to sit there and wait 20 minutes for someone else to take over. They said that so far, he had only done men's hair and he just started! Don't you have to have basic skills to be licensed? I can't believe they turned him loose in the salon! And hoped for the best!!!!
So I boycotted Super Cuts after that and started using Toni & Guy under these circumstances. I have always been happy with my blow outs and updos but noticed an odd phenominum there. Besides the extreme popularity of tatoos and piercings. EVERY time I have ever been there one of the employees has been crying. Always. Weird huh?

Oh, Ashley, I'm sorry about your bad haircut! I had one a couple months ago. I'm trying to let mine grown out a little and when I came home from the hair stylist my husband told me I looked like the little dutch boy! She had cut my bangs straight across! This last time when I went I told her I like my bangs longer and angled.
I'm another one who always has a good hairday right before I'm scheduled to get it cut!
Remember these hair days -

The first time was when I was younger. I had long straight hair that was all one length and told the stylist I wanted something a bit more current that would flatter my face and lifestyle. Somehow I walked out of there with a 1970s Farrah Faucett hairstyle with WAY too many bangs and completely feathered on the sides. And it was NOT 1970 or even close to it.
The second time was a couple of years ago. I said I wanted a shoulder length style with some layers and natural looking highlights. I stressed the "natural" part a million times and emphasized that I didn't want to look like I had stripes in my hair. When she rinsed out the hair color I almost died. I have dark brown hair naturally and she had added stripes of platinum blond. It was LITERALLY striped - exactly what I was afraid of - and looked completely ridiculous.

Ohhhhh yes! I have two times I will never forget. Once when we just moved to Northern virginia. I made an appointement and had my hair cut. I have very blonde straight hair and wear straight styles. When I was writing the check my daughter (4 1/2) said ''Mom, are you goin' outside like that?'' We we left there was a walkway between buildings. I whipped out a comb and undid all the spray and ''curling iron curls. Awful!
The next event was at work. I worked in a 12 story building with lots of people. For some unknown reason I got my hair cut during lunch. When I came back she had cut my bangs nearly straight across. The first person I saw at my office said ''you look so...... hard.'' I did too. I looked like a prison matron. Had to stay the whole day.
I would never ever let anyone color my hair. In fact I havent really had that many professional haircuts in my life partly because that first story happened when I was 23.
An interesting phenomenon here. It seems just when our hair looks great we seem to do something to it. Why is that?

i'm a guy so i can just shave it off :p
I have always felt that getting some stranger to do something as intimate as cut your hair was too invasive a practise to often engage in, and to have to pay them to boot, to do something that personal? I wish I could take my head off and cut my hair myself lol cuz I would know what to do. But no matter how much money you have, no human could ever have the privilage of styling their own hair in a 'hairdresser's eye view'.
I often these days just shave my head. I like short hair so it grows quickly and its free. Even if I make a mistake, it grows in soon so it is more even. The alternate is going there and paying, and maybe or maybe not liking it. But a buzzcut is so easy to do, it is highway robbery to give them money to what I could basically do at home. Then tip?! No thanks!

Wow. I am feeling EXACTLY the same as you!!! I had my haircut on Monday and I absolutely hate it.
My regular gal won't be working for several months .... and I was way overdue to have my hair cut/weaved, so I called a friend whose hair I LOVE and asked her where she goes. I don't know what possessed me to let her give me layers, but I did (I just do better with my hair all one length!) - - so I accept some responsibility for the mess that is now my hair!
The problem is that it looks very choppy around the layered area. One side is shorter and doesn't fall into place AT ALL. The other side is slightly better ... so what do I do??? Go back and ask her to even them out and make the one side that's halfway decent look like the other crappy, shorter side???! I normally have a decent amount of hair .. but now it feels thin, especially around the bottom half. I swear, I feel like Carol Brady!!!
On top of all this, my hair looks darker. I know she weaved blonde highlights into my hair (at least I THINK she did!) ......but I honestly think she chopped off most of the weave once she started hacking away.
ARRRGGGHHHH!!!!!!!!

Yup, more than once, in fact. The worst one ever was a week before I was leaving to visit Mr. Ingy in the Carribean where he was living when we got together. We had known each other for a while and we hooked up while he was in my town on vacation visiting relatives. After just a couple of weeks he had to return to the islands. He invited me to visit over Valentine's Day. I was so excited because we already knew at that point that we would be getting married eventually.
So just before I left, I went for a haircut. I was trying out a salon I'd never been to before -- BIG mistake. Not only did the stylist not pay any attention to what I asked her to do (trim my hair in the same bob hairstyle I already had), but she cut the whole thing about 2'' too short AND cut a huge HOLE (think horseshoe shape)in the back of my head between the ear and the nape of the neck. Then she apparently tried to ''fix'' it by cutting another one (slightly smaller) on the other side. I should have known something was wrong when she seemed to take forever to cut my hair and when she didn't offer me the hand mirror to check it myself. When I got home and checked it out, I just freaked!
The next day, a friend asked me what was up with my crazy haircut. I told her what happened and she called her stylist and got me an appointment as quickly as we could get to the salon. When her stylist saw my hair, he said ''OMG!'', gave me a hug, and told me not to worry because he was going to take good care of me (Awww!). He couldn't fix it all the way and I did have to go a little shorter still, but he made it about 90% better. As it turns out, Mr. Ingy proposed on that trip and we arranged our wedding for just a couple of months later. I got my hair cut on my wedding day (brave, huh?) and it was that haircut that got rid of the last semblence of the prior disaster. Since then, I've been VERY careful about who I allow to take a pair of scissors to my hair!
Good luck with your hair. If you find a good stylist who will do exactly what you say, stick with that person!
