Additional Comments: Hasselbeck 'Really Upset' With 'View' Co-Hosts Monday, September 29, 2008

Elisabeth Hasselbeck Elisabeth Hasselbeck is ''really upset'' with her "View" co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar about the presidential election, a longtime staff member of the show reportedly told the Chicago Sun-Times.
''It's not as bad as during the Rosie [O'Donnell] era,'' the source added, but said it's bad enough that ''View'' creator Barbara Walters has called a ''cooling off'' meeting between the conservative Hasselbeck and the more liberal Goldberg and Behar.
In July, Hasselbeck was in tears after a discussion about the use of the n-word, in which Goldberg told her the two "don't live in the same world."
Earlier this month, O'Donnell said her former co-host Hasselbeck and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin are "identical cousins ... women who hunt in high heels."
Left-leaning O'Donnell chose to depart the ABC daytime talk show "The View" earlier than planned last year following an on-air confrontation with Hasselbeck.
As a featured guest on "The Martha Stewart Show" in April, O'Donnell referred to Hasselbeck as "a little Republican who scared me."
Last year, Hasselbeck said she tried to keep her cool during her on-air spat with O'Donnell, in which a political discussion over the war in Iraq became heated when an angry O'Donnell decried Hasselbeck for not standing up for her when media outlets suggested that she'd called U.S. troops "terrorists" during a previous debate.

I don't watch The View very often, but I could argue the conservative point of view better that Elizabehth does. I'm a Democrat, but understand and agree with many conservative positions, particuarly when it comes to religion. Sadly, IMO, the conservatives only talk the talk and couldn't care less about really helping those in need, which is one of the true lessons to be learned from Jesus. He also had a lot to say about greed that they conveniently ignore.

Poor Elizabeth is like a lot of conservatives. She hears what Bill O'Reilly has to say, goes ''that makes sense'' but doesn't have the chops to really understand or defend her position. And apparently, she throws a tantrum when people call her on it.

If someone paid me a million plus to argue about politics, for about 10-15 minutes, before moving on to interview some B list star or talk about fall fashon or how to bake a pie,  weeping like an 8th grader on picture day would not be my career strategy.

I think Elisabeth makes good television. That's why they keep her around.

That said, if I were conservative (I'm an "Other") I'd want The View to hire someone intelligent to bring my point of view across. But being that the panel is liberal and seemingly unapologetically biased (That John McCain interview was HA-larious!) they probably would rather keep someone like Elisabeth who projects herself as immature and uninformed. She makes the rest of the panel seem like geniuses.

i'm far from a fan of bitsey's but i really felt barbara's on the spot was uncalled for. she has never done that to whoopi or any of the other ladies on the view. i just thought it was narrowed to her specifically to embarass her.

i think bitsey, being the only repub, really has to go OVER the top to prove her point because the 3 of them gang up on her and won't let her get her point across, mundane as it maybe. but it's still a talk show and they refuse to let her talk.

  • I have noticed that when EH talks BW looks down alot. What does that mean? I am not sure./Angela
  • perhaps BW is struggling not to laugh or trying hard not to snap at her! i have to say that when i watch the clips of elizabeth attempting to debate ... i want to yell at the computer screen! i cannot imagine having to look in her in the eyes while she's doing that and not cracking up!
  • i see that too!!! i mean they talk about how they are equal but it's only equal when it states the MAJORITY on the show. if they want to truly debate it they should let her put her food on her mouth THEN go at it. --carm
  • Yeah aren't liberals suppose to be so tolerant? Uh nope they are not. They sure do gang up on EH, but she holds her own.
  • I agree with you, carmen. I know I won't make my fellow liberals happy with this but I actually feel for Elizabeth on that show. Geez, to have to go up against not one but THREE loud, forceful voices (counting Sherri - if I'm not mistaken she's pretty liberal too) in their daily discussions must be MURDER. I've admired Elizabeth for how she puts up with it! On the shows I've seen where they discuss politics she almost always gets drowned out by someone before she finishes her statements and is very polite about it, which I think is quite unfair with her being in the minority. I don't watch the show every day and maybe I'd see more of her childishness if I did, but from the shows I've seen, I admire her as a pretty gutsy little thing at 100 pounds (or whatever she is). -SpellingAddict

I acutally laughed when Barbara asked her outright for 3 reason's for Palin and she couldn't do it at first!

Also when they were discussing Kim Kardashian and were saying how she is competing with athlete's and figure skater's, what was her claim to fame, just being famous for something she was on - did you see the look on Ms. Survivor's face? LMAO

  • no, I didn't I am sorry I missed that...good catch. i will have to see if their website shows that clip..thanks.../Angela
  • Couldn't do it at first??? She never could do it. Her response, after Barbara calmed everyone down so she could answer, was to try to turn the question on Obama. She never answered the question, at all. eom VeeJay
  • I can't laugh at anything from Barbara. She has lost my respect as a journalist. Those three women were fawning all over Obama and went overboard when McCain was on. No matter who one wants to vote far, I don't appreciate slanted programs. I get aggravated when Fox News does the same thing.

I watched the show this morning, and I have these words to say to Elisabeth Hasselbeck, ..... ''GROW THE HELL UP and learn how to speak your point and debate without taking things personally and then crying about it like a wittle titty baby''.

  • After I watched the show today. i thought she is going to either walk off or start yelling. i think she needs to calm down or better yet get someone who can debate.../Angela
  • I find that she looks like a child having a meltdown whenever her p.o.v. gets challenged. How dare anyone take a position that ISN'T reflective of her narrow, shallow view?! She really loses me when she gets that screaching tone to her voice--like 'look at me, I have a point'. She rarely seems to make a valid point! I found it quite disturbing when she was talking about Oliver North w/such reverence & how he patted Grace. Grace asked her why the strange man was touching her & EH's response was 'THAT was Oliver North, honey!' Grace had the right idea--that WAS a strange man (a VERY strange & scarry man, IMO)! eom
  • Would you say the same thing to Barbara who verbally attacked Jenny McCarthy after she was on the View?
  • I was critical of BW's verbal responses to several guests--including Van Prague (sp), both during & after the show! I didn't find anyone's treatment of McCain offensive. He has a way of talking down to the audience, particularly women & this was no different. If he can't take what The View dishes out, then he has no place in public office! eom

it has to be tough being in her position ... being the only republican on that stage. on the other hand, she really brings nothing to the discussion because she does nothing but regurgitate republican talking points (gov palin has experience because she can see russia from her back yard!). the other problem is elizabeth just doesn't know how to discuss or debate. she takes things way too personally - she yells and gets upset instead of speaking to her point. i can barely watch that show because of her ... she's like a little kid.

  • It would be a refreshing change if ABC/Disney would hire an intelligent panelist to present the Republican side, rather than someone who just spews the party line. There HAS to be an interesting, thinking Republican woman out there--whatever the age. They just never show it. I liked Lisa Ling, but she was pretty neutral. eom
  • exactly! i think it is important to have all views represented ... its just that elizabeth has no idea how to do that. it would be refreshing to have someone on the same level as joy or whoopie to present the other side.
  • well said.../Angela
  • Being a Republican myself, I do wish there was better representation on The View./Lila
