EIGHT!!!

Wow. As Morgan Freeman said in the immediate ad following this feat - we need new adjectives to describe this event.

I was screaming like I could actually help them win doing that.    LOL    We actually watched it in REAL time instead of DVR.   The dude that did the final leg (I forget his name but it began with an L) saved M's butt in both of the relays.    Whew!    Awesome to watch history in the making.   How about those girls getting six too?    Awesome Olympics year for the USA at the old pool!

  • His name is Lazek (or something like that) and is also an awesome swimmer as is the entire team. The women are working just as hard. Wooo USA.eom/WE

Thank you for not putting the results in the topic line!  I couldn't resist opening it though.  :))  The heat will be on TV in about a half hour.

I think of my grandson every time I see MP.  They're the same size -- height, weight, and shoe size!  Maybe I should call my gs and ask him if he likes to swim?

I am so amazed by Michael Phelps.  The gymnastics girls too, Nastia and Shawn.

  • He is an inspiration to so many. Um, I did sort of give it away in the topic line. I typed Phelps EIGHT times. (eek). eom/WE
  • I noticed the eight times on the name but I had already heard he won. It's too bad NBC couldn't mix up the schedule for the west coast so that we could watch simultaneously. /JoEllen

I just posted a bit about him in the Sat Chat. I'm so very glad swimming is over. Enough about Phelps - what about Natalie Coughlin, the first American woman to win 6 medals at the Olympics?

And what about the guy whose record Phelps broke - remember Mark Spitz? He would have loved to be in Beijing to give Phelps one of his medals - BUT, he wasn't invited. No one - IOC, USOC, NBC - thought to invite him.

  • My sister and I have been so steamed that Mark Spitz isn't there. Somebody dropped the ball big time - what a photo op and much more (that will have to happen stateside). The female swimmers have been unreal. These are some of the best games I've watched. eom/WE
  • Mark Spitz is there. He's all gray now. Johnny Weismueller (Tarzan)is the Gold Metal winner who should be remembered. Fed Up
  • Yeah, there was an interview (by Bob Costas I think) the other night with Spitz and Phelps. Wouldn't have known Spitz. Grey headed and no mustache. Gail
  • No, Mark Spitz was not there. That was a satellite interview that Costas did with Spitz. Spitz was in Detroit to watch his son in some tournament. He was on our local NBC affiliate with the local sportscaster on Friday night. . . . . . GCS
  • Last night hubby & I were talking about the Phelps Olympics. We're estastic he won but good grief on the coverage. /JoEllen
  • Oh, excuse me. I just ASSumed that he was there when I saw the interview. Gail

He is fantastic! I'll bet all the kids who used to pick on him are choking on their words today. Success is the absolute best revenge. Bravo, Michael!

  • I said the same thing to my husband. I wonder what those kids are thinking now. eom/WE
  • I did a quick MP bio search and discovered he and his father aren't in touch. I'll bet THAT ends soon. Was he teased as a child? More than any other kid, I mean. bink
  • Yes bink he was. His mom said due to his lanky body and small ears that stick out he was teased. Plus he's ADHD. Not sure if he got flak for that but I'll bet a lot of them are eating crow about now.eom/WE
  • As I said above, my gs is the same size (at 15). He was the cutest kid ever, thank goodness, because his size caused a lot of problems with adults. Because he was always a tall little boy they expected him to act older than he was. Not too many of his peers will ever catch up to him but his maturity has kicked in and adults are kinder now. I'll bet MP had that problem in addition to his ears, etc. It's always something ... bbb
