My grandmother made it, my mother made it and I made it--but not for ages now--beef kidney stew, which is beef kidneys in a delicious white sauce served with mashed potatoes. It's time consuming because you boil the living daylights out of the kidneys, changing the water several times before you slice them and simmer them.
My sons used to eat it until they got old enough to know what it was.

  • Yuck...that's all can say...yuck, yuck, yuck! BTW, how's working at the bookstore going? :)Tori
  • Blech! The thought of eating a kidney makes me nauseus. Although I used to LOVE chicken gizzards as a kid. Wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole now. Gail
  • Gail, I wouldn't eat gizzards or hearts but I love chicken and turkey liver. My mother could never make giblet gravy because I ate the liver, my dad ate the heart and gram loved the gizzard./U
  • Tori, I love the bookstore, howerver, the lease at the mall is up at the end of December and the comany is going to pull out of Illinois--there are only two stores. However, I went on an interview at Border's on Friday so everyone cross fingers, eyes, legs, etc and pray I ge the job. I should know sometime this week./U
  • U...wishing you the best with Borders. :)Tori

No strange foods here unless you'd count pickled garlic or oysters.

  • pickled garlic???? can't say I've tried it. I like smoked or fried oysters, but there is no way I'll slide a raw one down my throat. :)Tori
  • There's no way I'd eat raw oysters. ick/JoEllen

We are always surprised how many people dont eat Brussel Spouts.

We eat them often...more than green beans.

  • Good golly, Weeze....I just brought brussel sprouts at the grocery this morning...just for me, Jeff won't even try them. I didn't like them when I was a kid, but I love them now. :)Tori

I eat cocktail onions (like the kind you put in martinis) straight out of the jar.  Love them!

  • it's a texture thing with those little onions for me...I'll eat them but can easily leave them in the jar. :)Tori

I don't eat many strange foods, so I'm having a hard time coming up with something.  My husband and son wouldn't touch an olive and I love green olives, and I don't love ripe ones but I can eat them, if they show up in my salad or on pizza.

  • I pretty much like any olive. It took many years of convincing, but Jeff will now eat ripe olives, but I've yet to get him to try a green olive. :)Tori

Fried okra?    Although I think that isn't just a southern dish any more.   Terry turned GREEN when I first mentioned it after we got married, but I fried some up and begged him to taste it and it has been a fav of his ever since.    I never fry foods any more though.   The only time I have it is in a BBQ restaurant in OK that makes it really good.

We do like liver and onions and spinach.   :-)    Although the last time I had liver and onions I didn't much care for it.    No idea why.

  • I like fried okra...so does Jeff (that really surprises me) and another surprising thing...I bought some frozen seasoned okra...not fried and we both liked it. I love liver and onions!!! :)Tori
  • Love fried okra and liver and onions!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Cary_boo
  • I'm crazy about liver and onions, but you have to add the bacon,too./U
  • U, that's probably what they left out - the BACON! I knew something was wrong w/ that L&O. It's not something I can cook. I tried it a couple of times and handling it made eating it almost impossible for me. Not to mention the smell. Ewwww. Gail

I can't think of one thing, and I've been thinking for a couple of hours.

The only "strange" thing, isn't strange to me. It seems that most people who don't live in New England think of fried clams as the stripped ones, without the gooey stomach.

New Englanders think of clams with the whole package. Stripped clams are tasteless, for the most part.

  • oh. I think I'm going to be sick. I never new about the gooey stomach...but I like the tasteless ones. I'm going to be worrying now about eating fried clams. :)Tori

I don't have anything strange that I eat.  I guess I'm a picky eater.  There are more things that I won't eat than there are things that I do eat.

Oh!  I thought of something!  Kohlrabi.

Our elderly neighbor at the lake introduced us to this.  I've only had it sliced, raw with a little bit of salt sprinkled on it but I liked it.  Too bad I can never find it in the stores.  :-(

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • that is a beatiful picture...I've heard of kohlrabi, but I've never tasted it? Is it like turnips or parnips or radishes...kind of watery texture? :)Tori
  • Tori, if it's just right, it is crunchy like a raw carrot and sliced, it looks like a slice of potato. It has a slight raw cabbage taste to it. The salt brings out the flavor more. I think these friends grew their own because they told me that this year's didn't turn out so well, either they said they got too much rain or not enough and the Kohlrabi had a pithy consistency to it. I sure wish I could find it. They told me it's hard to find in most general supermarkets and to look in farmer's markets in the summer time. eom mags
  • I think I'd like it...now if I can just find it. :)Tori
  • Mags, I think it you buy some turnips and slice 'em and salt them, it may taste very similar. I used to love raw turnip slices, but haven't bought one in years and years. Gail
