Porridge is a hot dish made by boiling a grain - like oats, rice or wheat - in milk and / or water.

Message: I have always assumed it is some kind of......cooked cereal like cream of wheat or oatmeal, but thinned down. I'm dying to know now and will probably go google. I can usually wait until the next day, but this one has me really curious. I have wondered about it before (reading Dickens, etc.) but not bothered to look it up.

hmmm, this brings to mind the orphan Oliver holding out his bowl and saying "More, sir?" But I think that was gruel.
I'm going to guess that porridge is ----- oatmeal but that is not really a strange food item. --------

I say it's a fancy version of oatmeal - made from oats!
I like (and appreciate) ALL your questions regardless of subject matter.

Let's take a vote to be added to your reply here about whether you would prefer I moved on to the next topic of questions. I get the feeling many of you do not like the category of what strange foods are made of. There are several more, if you want them. (Be honest, I can take it) LOL
