Topic: Oh my lord..........I just figured it out.............

Additional Comments: If the USA would have scored first in overtime, they would have won the olympic gold in hockey. My husband and I were wondering why they were calling it a twenty minute overtime period when Canada won in overtime in just over six minutes. Call me a dumb blonde or 'stick a fork in me' but that's news to me. Were the rest of you confused too?

I wasn't surprised. I think it's like overtime in football. They put up the full 15 minutes BUT whichever team scores first (usually a field goal) is the winner and the time is just there if needed. If no one scored in that time, they'd put up another 15 minutes.

In sudden death it is the first to score and they have to put up some time limit so the time of a quarter, etc. (depending on sport) is what they post.

  • That's right (sort of). The first goal wins and that's why they call it sudden death or sudden victory. However in olympic hockey if no one scores after 20 minutes they go to a shoot out. They will do that during the regular NHL season as well but not during the playoffs or any Stanley cup games. I've seen games go 4 extra periods. (Kubette)
  • Wow. I guess the idea is the same but it's much easier (to a degree) to run the ball down and kick a field goal than it is to score in hockey. eom/WE
  • Actually in Canadian football in overtime, one team gets a crack at scoring and then the other team has to better it. If it's tied, they do it again. Something like that. I'm not sure on the details. I think it's the same in American college football. (Kubette)

I don't know anything about hockey, but I've heard the term "sudden death" overtime, so I wondered what the 20 minute thing was about, as well. I happened to catch the end of the game.
