Kyle finally told Oliver what he would lose if he took him back, and why he finally moved on. He found a boyfriend who would stand by him and make promises to him. After all those nights of holding Oliver when he would get drunk and crawl into bed to cry about his fears, Kyle found someone who is just as strong as he is. Nick wants to be his rock and face the world together. And Kyle wants to make the same promise to Nick, and keep it.
Kyle was at a bad point in his life when he tried to get Oliver back. Rebecca had just died, he had gotten into trouble with the law, and he was at risk of expulsion after three years of medical school. Oliver wouldn't budge, no matter how Kyle pleaded with him. Only when Kyle agreed to go out with Nick did Oliver set in motion the events that led to him coming out. Now, in spite of Oliver's jealousy, Kyle has everything he could ask for. He has a generous, thoughtful, intelligent, passionate boyfriend who brings out the best in him, respects him, celebrates with him and isn't afraid to show affection in public. Oliver isn't anywhere near ready to be that kind of boyfriend, and what if he just wants Kyle back because he's afraid that no one else will have him? Kyle knows that it would be a struggle to find happiness with Oliver, while with Nick, he's already halfway there.
''I'm still going through it,'' Kyle told Oliver. He knows that Oliver desperately wants his life to be better for coming out, and that just doesn't happen right away. Even Kyle, whose parents encouraged him to open up, still struggles to believe that he deserves to be loved. His confidence suffered when his love for Oliver wasn't enough to protect him. Nick makes Kyle feel desirable and proud of everything that he is, and like part of a larger community with the power to change the world. Nick isn't needy or possessive; he's sensitive and wears his heart on his sleeve, but he trusts Kyle to be brutally honest with him, and tries to be supportive of whatever is important to Kyle, including his concern for Oliver. Kyle feels protective of Oliver, but he wants to be worthy of Nick and give back as much as Nick has given him. Kyle knows that his life got better when Oliver's rejection forced him to make new friends and seek new challenges, and it wouldn't be fair to Oliver to indulge his nostalgia when he needs to do the same.
