Topic: Zane is in secondary school!?!

I meant to post a topic about this, but totally forgot. I'm assuming secondary school = middle school (Grades 5-8). I'm hoping they make Zane 10, roughly the same age as Jack. I was surprised they aged Zane already. He was born only a few months after Sam(Tommy) and Bree, and they're both not even in kindergarten yet. They aged Duke too quickly and then ended up killing him off, It looks like they'll just do the same thing to his son now.

SORAS really bugs me some times. What's next- Will Sierra be attending college in the fall?

This is one hot mess!

Kevin Buchanan - Born: 1976 (should be 33/34 today)
Dan Gauthier is 46

Duke Buchanan - Born: 1992 (should be 18 today; would have been 14 at Duke's death)
Matthew Metzger is 30 now, but was 26 when Duke died

Joey Buchanan - Born: 1982 (should be 27/28 today)
Bruce Michael Hall (who last played Joey) is 32

Jessica Buchanan - Born 1986 (should be 23/24 today)
Bree Williamson is 30

AND Bree is the same age as Zane (actually older by about 5 months), and she's running around like a little girl still (with her mama running around acting like a big girl).

Completely OT, but your mention of Bree made me think of this question: Are they ever going to address the fact that that child's name is Brennan Brennan? //SqueezeMe

I've thought they may have overdone it now. At least Jessica is playing 30 (deductive reasoning on my part). No guesses as to how old Natalie is. LOL. eom/sea

One other thing--most kids don't go to secondary school until they are 14, so it's starting to look like Kevin may be older than Viki. eom/sea

Heck they did it to Kevin and Joey, I remember they went upstairs on friday episode as 4 and 6 year olds and came down on Monday young teens, that was the first time I had seen that and it was pretty strange. I thought by now Zane would be done with college in his 4 years on this earth.

Yes but Kevin, Joey and Jessica were sorased as a unit keeping the age spans more or less correct between them as well as with their cousins CJ and Sarah and Al Holden. Zane and Bree were born in the same year but she's still 4 or 5 while Zane is 11+??? And of course there's Danni leap frogging over Jack who was born years earlier. It's not the sorasing that bugs me. That's pretty much a given in soaps. It's that they're not even trying to keep their stories straight./kari2

I had read a spoiler somewhere that hinted that they might be casting someone older to play Zane - they were being coy as to HOW old, but there seemed to be speculation that it was old enough to be in a story related to his "parents" and the discovery that Dad is really Granddad.

Many soaps get away with 6-9 years SORAS - that's about what they did for Dani, and I know AMC did it with Bianca and GH has done it with just about every kid. You'd be hard pressed to find it go much beyond that, however.

So, if Zane is in "secondary school" - according to sources online "secondary school" in England is for children aged 11-15. The last we saw of Zane was 3 years ago when he was born, so a healthy 9 year bump isn't that unrealistic, if they decide to keep him sort of around Jack and Shane's age, I can almost deal with it. But if they start getting toward Matthew and Dani (which would make sense, if they wanted to do a triangle - two Buchanan teens going after Todd Manning's daughter), then that would be an almost 12 year jump, which is just insanity

I've watched soaps long enough to get used to SORASed kids, but this one just whapped me in the face for some reason. Maybe it's because Zane was born such a short time ago and then left Llanview. I'm used to seeing a toddler at one moment and then a 10-year-old the next, etc, but we've never seen Zane and it just seemed really strange. Dani was easier for some reason because we never knew about her. But Zane's conception, the rift between Kelly and Kevin, and their reconcilation was a big story. The obvious reason for SORASing Zane to secondary school age is that will somehow explain why Kelly stays in Llanview without him. Leaving a 4-year-old behind would be unforgivable, but leaving a older child in private school isn't. (Unless you're Tea and you dump your child in a private school far away from you without her consent.) Wanda

I think it whapped you (and me) in the face Wanda because the sorasing is finally catching up with the characters. It's not just Zane's sorasing - by itself it's not a problem. But combined with Duke's sorasing and Kevin's sorasing, the show is suggesting that Kevin (in his early 40s?) is GRANDFATHER to a pre-teen or teen, and that Clint and Viki (at 60-65 themselves) are GREAT-GRANDPARENTS to the same child. Soaps have played with the generational stuff long enough that they're blurring the lines way too much. It would be like if Clint got Kim pregnant and had another child technically younger than his great-grandson Zane (or other grandchildren), but that kid (if he was ever created) would probably be sorased to his teens or early 20s by 5 years after birth, even though his mother would still be a relatively young woman. Some are wondering if the show is really going to give Kelly a pre-teen/teen child since she's supposed to be in her 30s. It also messes up timelines if you think too much about it. :-) Children born before we saw their parents actually get together. LOL - Emily

Zane is Kelly's son with Kevin's son Duke, conceived during sex (their one and only time?) in the church rectory, at the same time a tornado hit town (yeah, yeah, it was while Higley was writing the show). Kelly was with Kevin then (I don't think they were married), and he found out about their affair when they were found in the church debris after the tornado and taken to the hospital. Spencer Truman delighted in Kevin having to choose which one got medical treatment first. He chose Kelly, who I think was worse off, but Duke ended up dying in the meantime. Later, Kelly found out she was pregnant (something she had been desperately hoping for in general). Kelly had gone to Truman for a medical procedure to improve her chances, but at the same time Truman had Kevin injected with something to make him sterile (yeah, yeah, it was Higley). Anyway, after realizing that the baby was Duke's, Kevin eventually accepted that and decided it was more important to help Kelly raise his grandson after Duke's death, so they moved to London for a fresh start, away from any possible gossip about their arrangement. Duke was already badly sorased himself, and he only died like 4 years ago. It all happened in JvD's first year as Clint (2005-2006), as Kevin decided he would take Clint's place at the BE office in London so Clint could stay in Llanview for his daughters' sakes. So Zane (named after the western author Zane Grey) is technically 3-4 years old, but has apparently been sorased to at least 11 years old (when students supposedly begin secondary school in England). Soaps often make the drastic leaps in ages if the child has been off-canvas for some years, thinking the audience doesn't really remember how old he should be, but it's ridiculous that Kevin at his age is a grandfather to a pre-teen or teen, and that Clint and Viki (at 60-65 years old) are the great-grandparents of the same child. Many wish for tptb to fix Zane's paternity to make Kevin his father instead (kind of like fixing Jessica's paternity back to Clint). There's also some speculation that the writers goofed on British schooling and meant for Clint to say elementary school instead of secondary, which would be a more reasonable soras for Zane. eom

Just this week, Kelly said that the last time she spoke to Melinda on the phone, she hung up in a hurry because Zane was fussing. So this is a case of Soap Opera Ultra-Rapid Aging Developmental Disability Syndrome (SOURADDS).

It has been done before. Y&R did it w/Victoria. One day she was about 6 yrs old, the next Victor took her on a trip to Europe, leaving her there at a boarding school. Six months later she came back home to Genoa City & she was 15 or 16 yrs old! The character has never been the same since--not in a good way.
