Duke died just after having sex with his step-mother Kelly (she raised him for years back in Texas). They had sex in St. James' rectory during a tornado. Another tornado hit, knocking the building over on their nearly-naked bodies. Both ended up in the ER needing Kevin to make a decision who would get treated first. Dr. Spencer Truman manipulated the situation so Kevin would look bad either way. Kevin chose Kelly, believing Dr. Truman that Duke would recover because he was so much younger and stronger. But Duke died. Kevin blamed himself mostly but also Kelly for his son's death.
Kelly wasn't at Duke's funeral because she was still unconscious from her injuries. Dorian barged into Duke's service and screamed horrible things at Kevin and his parents blaming them for Kelly's injuries. Viki vigorously defended her son while his father Clint said nothing. Clint and Dorian were a couple at that time or would be soon after. Kelly recovered and was miraculously pregnant. Less than six months later, she prematurely-delivered what was presumed to be Duke's son (Spencer had made Kevin sterile). Kevin and Kelly later reconciled off screen and have been in London raising Zane.

Matthew Metzger played Duke.
Duke died during a storm if I recall correctly. The building he and Kelly were in was hit by a tornado or something.

Matthew Metzger was an American Idol reject brought on to play Duke. His acting was very weak, but instead of recasting or taking the character off the canvas for a while, the show stupidly killed off the grandson of a core family. It was dumb when they did it with Drew and dumb when they did it with Duke. ~ Rhonda
Rhonda - I can't agree more! However, the Duke SORAS I was always against - I thought it was way, way too soon, and in many respects I think with both Duke and even Drew they had second thoughts of having saddled Bo and Kevin with children so much older. I believed both were sacrificed in attempts to keep Bo and Kevin relevant. /eom/ Gallagher
What about when they killed off Tony Lord and his son Bryan? How stupid was that!!
