Always somethin', eh?

At the risk of board wars, what's everyone's take on McCain's choice of Sara Palin; her family situation and her qualifications?

Why are her qualifications being questioned so much, yet Obama's aren't any more?  What do Canadians think....would they rather see ANYONE in office that's not a Republican?  Is Biden the antithesis of Obama (old Washington vs. new Washington)?

At this point, I see lots of promises, as always. Lots of "I'm a regular guy/gal...just like you, vote for me" and lots of politics as usual.  *sigh*

I just saw in the Toronto Star that 66% of Canadians want Obama to win. So why is it we elected Harper, aka Bush Jr. in our last election? I haven't followed the American election scene much this year, unlike the past 2 terms. I just want the Republicans out of there. This Palin woman sounds like a radical and I think McCain made a big mistake in having her as his running mate. I am a firm believer that pro life/pro choice etc. has no place in politics but it seems that things like this are always front and centre in elections in the US, not so much here. I would love to see the day when religion/race/gender has nothing to do with elections and politics and we just vote for the people.

Harper (our PM) has commercials about him now. Actors talk about all the wonderful things he's done, including one woman who says "I like that he's a family man with young children". What the hell does that have to do with his leadership qualities? And at the very end, they show him sitting hunched over with a dopey look on his face. I think he needs a new campaign manager!

  • Q) Yeah, I don't quite get why Right To Life or Pro Choice ends up being a big focus of campaigns. I really don't think the law will change. The only thing I can think of is people like to think there are like-minded people running the country. I'm not convinced that Palin is a horrendous choice. I have to give her a chance to show us who she is. I'm not convinced that Obama can lead the country. Frankly, I'd like a McCain/Biden ticket but I guess that's asking too much

Sigh, I am already sick and tired of the campaign stuff.  Honestly, I am not impressed with either candidate, but if I got to vote, I would vote Obama.  From what I have read so far, Palin has very little in the way of experience with foreign policy.  Her state has less population than the city I live in (seriously).  She is all for "abstinence only" education in schools instead safe sex education.  I believe that is a good message (abstinence) but very unrealistic and you have to only look at her daughter to see how well that works (ok, that's mean, but it hasn't worked in her own family!).  I dunno, she just doesn't seem like a good choice to me for a VP candidate.  But what do I know, I don't get a vote and I am not an American!

Your election process is sooooo long in the US...how can you stand it, lol? Our Prime Minister is about to get the Governor General to set an election date of October 14th for a Federal election...campaigning, voting and electing the PM will be over an done with in 6 weeks, that's more like it *wink*

  • Q) I'm not thrilled with my choices this year either. But the misinformation out there is terrible. Actually, Palin belongs to a women's group that is anti abortion and pro-birth control. She also believes that schools should teach abstinence as another choice, but this is not what's being circulated on the internet (that she's pro-birth control, that is) No, she doesn't have experience in foreign policy, but neither does Obama and he wants to be the President. Plus, his big push for change, and then choosing a guy who has been around Washington for 30+ years doing the same ol' same ol', is disconcerting as well. Which way does he want it? I'm thinking he chose Biden to ease the minds of Democrats who were nervous about his own inexperience. And I think McCain chose Palin to try to attract ''new'' Republicans, young voters, by bringing in a Washington Outsider with youth (and looks) on her side. What about who is best for the country for both/either party? Everyone seems to be making choices based on winning. Of course, if you don't win, you can't change anything. Glad I'm not in politics!
  • Judles) See that's something I didn't know...all you hear is the abstinence thing, which I think is the way to go ALONG with birth control, so that's a good thing. I am glad that I don't have to vote in the US!

Not big on Politcal topics, but I dont understand her accetping. I mean it is an honor, but 5 kids, one which has Downs. Isnt she busy enough? My Dad is McCains age (and no way can I see my Dad as the Pres of the USA), but what if he would die in office? She's got alot of irons in the fire at home, not to mention a pg teen (not that that should make a difference, but it is another worry).
    I stand a Democrat!

I'm keeping my fingers quiet! NO response! I skim other politcal boards and things get pretty nasty. Most of us have a candidate in mind already and personally I don't want to read the bashing of either candidate. There is no perfect candidate. So you weigh the good and the bad and make your own decision and try to ignore everyone elses opinions.

Hey Q - how are ya?

I think McCain made a fatal error picking Palin.  She's simply not qualified.  When he announced her my first thought was simple manipulation of the Hillary supporters.  He just wanted a woman.  Mistake.

While I do not think her family issues should come in to play,  I do think they will.

I, for one, am always ready for this cr@p to be done with.  That said, I thank God I live in a country where we have this privilege, regardless of how annoying it gets.  To paraphrase Voltaire, I may not agree with what everyone says but I'll defend their right to say it.
