Subject: Henrietta: None of that happened without P&G's authorization. EW could have all the ideas in the world, but it didn't mean she had the power to make them happen without P&G's approval. She was also being paid to take the flak for bad decisions her Corp. bosses made. We've seen lots of soaps w/bad decisionmakers, no matter WHO is HW or EP. The song we kept hearing prior to EW being blamed for everything was that everything was MADD's fault. MADD was gone & bad decisions kept on happening. Location shoots aren't automatically bad. In the early 80's they were very good for soaps, in general. But there needs to be more substance. Not just great settings. Unfortunately, marketing folks, who Corp. listens to more than EPs or HWs, felt that shakey cameras & pathetic locations were the answer to problems that really came down to bad storytelling. The real shame was/is that there are lots of great soap storytellers out there who could be making soaps shine, instead of sink into oblivion. eom
