Topic: Anyone Else Not As Interested In Soaps Since GL is Gone?

Additional Comments: I used to record ATWT and GL daily, and watch Y&R, OLTL and GH on Soapnet a couple times a week.  Since GL is off the air, I have still recorded ATWT every day, but I find that I am less interested in the show, knowing that I don't have it with GL as a companion.  It's wierd to describe, but I was wondering if anyone else felt this way?  It's not that ATWT has gotten worse in the last week and a half, I think it's psychological on my part knowing that I won't be watching GL after ATWT as I have done for years.  Can anyone else relate to this?

I lost interest in soaps several years ago.  This is the first time in my life that I am not watching any of them on a daily basis.  None of them are engaging or even entertaining enough to invest one hour a day.

  • Do you watch ANY serial drama, week-to-week, airing in primetime or on cable? If so, that's what you've replaced your soaps with in some way shape or form.

    I miss GL SO MUCH!!!!

I haven't had the heart to try another soap yet. I don't know if I could get into one at this point. We shall see. GL ending is still very surreal.

I followed ATWT and GL for 30+ years but dumped ATWT in '05.    I thought I'd be interested in checking out ATWT before it folds, but I haven't been -- from seeing the ads, ATWT is unrecognizable to me.   After GL's strong close, the other shows seem even more hollow.

That's funny you should suggest that, because I used to watch GL, ATWT and Y&R, but during the last six weeks, I've pretty much stopped watching Y&R and ATWT for mostly unrelated reasons. I took a break from Y&R because I was just tired of the"Nick and Phyllis and Sharon Show", and watching Lily play her cancer story like she's 'ready for her closeup, Mr. DeMille'. And I was became disgusted with ATWT's disregard for their vets. (Lisa hasn't been on since July, Nancy hasn't been on in six months, and even though Bob and Kim had a storyline, well, sort of, what they turned the characters into was stupid and insulting.) I'm sure I'll probably reconnect with both of those shows at some point in the coming months, but for now, I've spent the time I'd have been watching those shows instead searching for old classic era GL clips on YouTube.

I dont feel the need to watch them now. I watch Y&R some. I gave up on ATWT a long time ago, I watch from time to time but that show has been horribly written since the late 90s. The writing is so sporadic and they completely shun their veteran characters for the most boring characters known to the world of soaps. Its all part of the trend not just in soaps but TV in general. T.V. is def a waste land now and is written for the "no attention span" dumbed down of this country. Very few shows hold my attention anymore. And If its filmed with those damned hand held cameras, it automatically gets turned in my household. I had to get medicine for motion sickness from watching those imcompetents who filmed GL.

GL was the only one I watched. I have no intention of watching any other daytime shows let alone soaps. The thing is it didn't matter to TPTB what we said or did they were bent on getting rid of GL and that was it. So maybe we can make a greater statement by not watching daytime at all.

Yep. It happened to me too. I always watched both shows together. So if one wasn't that great I had the other to look forward to. But the bonus was the days when both shows had really good episodes. Now it's not fun to watch ATWT knowing there's nothing else coming. The cast of GL had become family to me. Even as the show got stripped to the bare bones seeing my family made my day. ATWT is changing so much. They rarely use the vets -a mistake GL did not make. Now a good number of former ABC actors are on the show. Too much change. No wonder I don't look forward to watching my one soap left. I did try watching all the soaps still on along with ATWT but I can't get into any of them.

Yes.  I check the ATWT board and read summaries but haven't watched since GL went off.  I wasn't a regular watcher recently, but still consider myself a fan.

I mentioned on the board awhile back that I bet this is exactly what would happen.  I don't think CBS ever really considered that once we were gone, their other shows would suffer as well.  I'm very interested in seeing the ratings in the upcoming months, because I'm betting they go downhill in a big way.

I smile when I see the new CBS promos for their HOT HOT HOT Daytime Lineup that now includes the fabulous Let's Make a Deal!  CBS DAYTIME is where it's AT!!

LOL, what a HOOT! hahahahaha.  Your soaps were where it WAS honey, and you just trashed your lineup for good.  Gone are the days of CBS ruling daytime, I can tell ya that.  Just wait for it.

  • I bet you're right about other soaps' ratings being affected by GL. I bet a lot of GL watchers also were watching other soaps, and have just decided to quit now that GL is gone. (Edward)

For years GL was the only soap I watched.  When Beth and Ricky went to AMC I started watching that just to see how they did on that show.  But they were so badly placed on AMC that it was embarrasing to watch.  That and the fact that the show itself is so unbelievably bad with lame plots and less than prepared actors and characters that were beyond stupid, that I gave up.  Last week I tried to watch As The World Turns.  I used to watch that in the summer when I was a teenager (in the dark ages).  I watched for 3 days and there was not one character that I recognized nor one that I really got "into".  I may check in on the ones that Crystal and Gina go to just to see them play a different part but I will never let myself care about another show like I did GL.

  • Tunifer, I don't think we need to worry about letting ourselves fall for another show as much as GL. I just don't think there's any way it could happen! fee

I have lost interest in watching soaps, too.  Once GL went to the new production method, I found it hard to watch and SL were such a waste of time.  I would watch it online and often FF or just read the description and skip the episode.  During the last month, I was back to watching it when it was broadcast at 2:00 PM.  Now that GL is done, I have no interest in watching TV in the middle of the day, though I miss the break.  My dog doesn't understand why I don't stop what I am doing to sit and watch TV...she always sat with me.  So now I take time to read a book and she sits with me.  Books are much easier to FF'd.  There is absolutely nothing else worth watching on daytime, except reruns on WGN...I like Becker.

I just watched the new comedies on Wednesday night on ABC.  I must be getting old, but I thought all four of them were terrible.  Back to reading!

Yes, definitely. I started watching ATWT again just to see what was going on while I waited to see the last few shows of GL and since GL went off, I can't even think of watching it now. I can't even imagine sitting down to watch another daytime soap at this point. It's very sad. I still miss my Guiding Light...incredibly.

Yes, I wondered if it was just me!   I had been watching Y&R again for about the last 6 months and was really enjoying it.   But this whole killing off of Colleen, and the stupid shenanigans at the bank with the Scooby Gang, has had me ffding for the first time.  (It started last week!  Strange timing, isn't it!)  I don't look forward to watching Y&R like I had been (but that could be because Patti hasn't been on, and I just loved watching her.   (Kind of like Dinah!   The fascination of a train wreck waiting to happen.  I just LOVE characters like that!)   I don't know if it's the SLs on Y&R, or if it's me.   But I DEFINITELY have NOT been enjoying it the last 2 weeks, like I was before GL went off.  And I know what ya'll mean about the other shows being fluff!   They are NOT the same.  GL even at it's worst still had family and family scenes that were good.  And when it was at it's best, it just drew you in like no other show can.  And when they shut us out.   It's just TOO hard!!!!

Me, too. I stopped watching AMC when they fired Dixie (Cady McClain) but started picking up a few episodes when they brought Dr. Dave (Vincent Irizarry) back. AMC is so silly now and are losing (read firing) a lot of people with the move to LA. It's certainly not the AMC of old.

Since GL left I've just lost interest in the soaps. I don't want to watch OLTL because I think that they're next on the chopping block and I tried ATWT but found it unwatchable. I've never been able to get into Y&R and B&B or Days or GH. I guess I'm done with soaps.

Me definitely. I also watch OLTL, and after the emotional weight of GL's final weeks, OLTL just feels like silly, stupid fluff. I turned Tuesday's episode off after the first five minutes. This is the first time in decades that I'm down to only one soap, and am barely watching it. Overall, the soaps just aren't as addictive anymore because they're just not that good anymore. The whole tune in tomorrow thing just doesn't work anymore.

Me!! I noticed the lack of interest in my other soaps (ATWT & Y&R) the last couple of weeks that GL was on. I figured it was just me, or part of the mourning process.

  • I like a soap to watch and I started watching Gen Hospital and OLTL about 4 years ago, not regular basis but once in awhile so that I know who they all are. I enjoy them. I am not hooked on them or on a certain character like I was GL so I can have a little more perspective. But the productiona and the acting is good and the stories are as good and entertaining. Can't ask for more than that.
