Topic: Where are the elders?

Additional Comments: Does anyone remember when Soaps had wise older characters that often gave pretty good advice?  Where is a Papa Bauer?  A Henry Chamberlain?  An H.B. Lewis? Or a Bert Bauer?  The only elder on the show now is Alexandra and she's portrayed as a vain, needy woman. I just don't see Buzz or Josh or Billy as elders.  At least, not yet.

No elders?  REVA is still on the show, is she not?  That beast most definitely qualifies as old and tired.

Hey, who could ask for a more stellar example of good old fashioned parenting than a man who come back in to his daughters life sporting fancy Foster Grants with a sleazy "screenwriter" and a sneaky Indie actress to make money on her whacky life story?? Papa Hawk, my Hero.

Not only aren't there many older characters on the shows, but the ones that are still around weren't so stellar when it came to morality and clean living - and still aren't.  Reva has, on occasion, been the "older influence" on her granddaughter, Susan. But her advice has to be more like "Do as I say, not as I STILL do".

There are no more role models on soaps; young or old.

The lack of older generations IS a big part of the problem w/soaps & has been for yrs.  TPTB (Corp) don't think that tweens will tune in to watch 'old folks'.  So they've dumped many of the veterans, claiming cost/budget concerns or making such insulting offers that actors have 'opted not to re-sign with the show'.  None are acceptable reasons for ruining the multi-generational approach to storytelling.

They aren't writing stories for the older generations, not because the writers can't do it, but because their bosses don't think the audience they have defined so narrowly, is interested in anything other generations have to say.  They also tend to only look at soaps in terms of skin & sex opportunities, not rich, well told stories about something other than frequent, meaningless sex scenes.  Even romance has gone out the window.  Soaps have suffered for all those losses!
