Message: Men were also allowed to have their wives commited to mental institutions based solely on their say so. It didn't make it right. Just as 'taking' their wives wasn't rape. It wasn't considered rape, even in the early to mid-70's. The first lawsuit of its kind was the basis for Roger & Holly's story--it WAS marital rape, not an entitlement.
I don't think that most women would like to go back to those days when an abusive husband was told to 'walk it off' by the cops (at best), just to have him return a few minutes or hours later, after a beating. Or that spousal abuse was considered 'a family matter', something the authorities didn't get involved with at all.
It was also believed that women were responsible for rape, as it still is in many cultures.
There was also a time when women couldn't vote, couldn't own property & couldn't inherit. In some cultures some of that is still true.

Message: You might not like it and think it's wrong, but back in the day it was a wife's DUTY to do it at the husband's convenience. And you can't change history, just by not liking it. that's the way it was. When I grew up in the 60s, that's the way it was. This was part of what changed history. So things are different now, but they weren't back then.

Message: I know you were kidding, AM! This is one of my fav storylines and scenes. Of course it was ugly, but MZ and MG were at their absolute best. Very powerful and excellent acting! MZ was just simply the best actor ever on a soap. This scene shows that.
