Another thread got me thinking more about this. Robin has never been my favorite character, but the pairing is interesting.
Patrick wants a woman who is less intelligent than he is so she won't challenge him in any way. Robin is just more intelligent than Patrick. Robin is also very educated-something which is not what Patrick wants or needs.
Yes, Alan and Monica married-but there was infidelity in the marriage.
If you look in the medical field, you will see male doctors and other males in positions of power who have wives who are less educated and less accomplished than the husband is. Why? My opinion is because the male/husband has an ego which is needed for the work he does, so they don't want to marry someone who will challenge them at home. Actually, the wives are very good mothers, too.
Patrick's reaction when there is trouble in the relationship is to run to bar, get drunk, and complain. Robin's reaction is to start a blog-much more positive. A measure of intelligence is how a person solves problems.
Just a thought.

just out of curiosity, why do you think that robin is more intelligent than patrick? he may be more immature when it comes to relationships, but isn't he supposedly a brilliant surgeon? actually, robin has been pretty immature lately too....she may have a mature outlook when it comes to the big picture, but her constant nagging is childish and ridiculous.
unfortunately, i have come across a lot of male doctors that are married to clueless wives....they are often intelligent men, but they are still playing the field b/c they can....it's all about being in a position of power.
