Topic: Real meanings behind popular songs

Additional Comments:

I'm listening to Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry."  Again.  It is the song I curse because the telephone noise in it sounds like my cell phone.  But I digress.

I just learned that it was written after Natalie Wood's death and is about the tabloids and the stories they ran about the tragic drowning.

I also know that Eric Clapton wrote "Tears in Heaven" about the 4-year-old son he lost when the boy fell out a window to his death.  Clapton has said he will never perform or record the song again.

So... do you know any music trivia like this?  SHARE!

Here's another one - Heart's "Magic Man" was written by Ann Wilson about her relationship with the band's guitarist, Roger Fisher. "Barracuda" was written as a response to a jerky magazine writer who wanted Ann and her sister Nancy to say they were lesbian lovers.

  • Awesome! Ann Wilson has one of the best singing voices out there. I love Heart!!! (except for ''These Dreams'' - that song is lame). : ) --susie

Sara Bareilles wrote the song "Love Song" ( you know - "I'm not gonna write you a love song....cause you tell me...) when her recor label requested that she write a marketable love song.  The lyrics express her growing frustration as she declares she is "not going to write you a love song today.  "   The video is awesome and makes me love the song even more.

  • Ang, thanks for that cool tidbit. I'm actually tiring of the song because it's SUCH a hit, they play it all the time. But the story behind it makes so much sense! HILARIOUS! --susie

The only ones I can think of are nursery rhymes! LOL

Sing a song of Sixpence is about Blackbeard and the song was sung as a code to recruit pirates while they were on dry land.  There are references in the rhyme about how they overtook ships as well and murdered the crew to collect whatever goods they had.

And of course, Ring around the Rosey, which was about the plague.

I know there's some actual songs that I know the hidden meaning to, but I can't think of them!  Great topic, by the way!  :o)

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • I knew about Ring Around the Rosie, but the Blackbeard info is new to me. The meanings behind Nursery Rhymes and Fairy tales fascinate me, as they seem so innocent, but usually are much more sinister. --susie
  • The ring around the rosy being about the plague is an urban legend, as is the pirate recruiting one. Links inside. =^..^=
  • Well there goes all my beliefs out the window! LOL j/k I've never really used snopes, but what about this link (inside)???? :o) eom Tukey
  • Tukey, click on the ''More information about this page'' at the bottom of your link page. It explains it all... that's the very page that fooled the game show. =^..^=
  • Ahhhh! So does this make me gullible or naive????? LOL :o) eom Tukey

If memory serves me correctly, The Guess Who's ''American Woman'' was written on stage as they preformed.
''Black Velvet'' by Alannah Myles is about Elvis.
''Our Lips Are Sealed'' by The Go-Gos is about gossip and tabloid rumours.

I am sure there are lots more that I cannot think of right now.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • ''Black Velvet'' was Francesco's favorite song. Francesco was my Italian (REALLY Italian - an exchange student thing) roommate in college. We abhored each other, but he thought that when I sang, I sounded like Alannah Miles. LOL! He also made some kick-ass pasta carbonera. As for the Guess Who... they wrote a frigging SONG on stage??? Holy crap! Betty, I know you'll come up with more. You're my idol on this board. I have a thing for 'chick drummers.' LOL! What I would give to be able to have my hands do two different beats at once! --susie
  • I heard that ''American Woman'' was performed during a concert in Canada following a long leg of their tour in the US. LOL......................................Sparky
  • *American Woman* is an anti-war song. According to Randy Bachman, the American Woman in question is The Statue of Liberty. SlapBrooke

I heard one time that ''The Dance'' by Garth Brooks was about suicide . . . HUH???

I love the message of that song and it is very clear to me.  If you could look into a crystal ball and know exactly what life has in store for you.  Along the way you could avoid the bad things coming your way by knowing in advance.   But, in doing so, you would also miss many of life's blessings by skirting around the bad stuff.

He could have missed the pain of the break-up, death of his love, or whatever the pain came from, but he would have to have missed ''the dance'' and it was one of his most cherished blessings.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • I don't know that song. But I hope the rumor you heard isn't true. Sounds like it's a powerful song - assuming it's about living life, not taking it. --susie
  • Interesting take! I always thought the song was in reference to the space shuttle that exploded a few seconds after take off...with the meaning if you knew what was going to happen, you would miss all the good times you had together. I love hearing different interpretations of songs! :o) eom Tukey
  • The song is written with a double meaning both as a love song about the end of a passionate relationship and the lyrics also work to tell the story of someone dying because of something they believe in, or a moment of glory. Brooks illustrated this in the music video for the song. AngD - and this is as I took from a website....

Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" is about Elvis Presley.

Supposedly, James Taylor's "Fire and Rain" is about drug abuse.

Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" is her singing to God. All this time, I thought it was a regular sappy love song to some random dude.

The Eagles' "Hotel California" is not about Satan, but a metaphor for the music industry and how sometimes how you end up owing your soul to the record company.

Speaking of the record companies, Billy Squier's "The Stroke" is about record executives making deals with singers and not about masturbation. Which is funny, since VH1 put it on their list of "Dirtiest Songs."

  • Chewy, since when has a program director at VH1 (or MTV) ever had to check FACTS when they create their list-based shows? LOL! I had a feeling about Debby Boone. Her dad is totally creepy, but she's a well-known ''gospel'' singer (read: religious musician). But that tidbit on Depeche Mode is interesting. My brother traveled to Chicago to play at the lead singer's wedding a while back. I asked if he played 'Strange Love.' He didn't. Crud. LOL! --susie

Story has it Phil Collins wrote In the Air Tonight about an incident he saw happen on a yachet.  Years after the incident Phil invited the man from the incident to a front row concert seat and shone a single spotlight on the man while he sang ''In the Air Tonight'' live for the first time.

Although I have also heard Phil Collins denies that story and says the song is about his marital breakup.  But the first story makes for better gossip.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • *snickering at your posting name* LOVE IT! And I'm always one for good gossip, so we'll go with the yachting accident. I like that song. They used it on DOOL back in the '80s when it was a hit. The radio station I listen to at work often mentions that Phil Collins' songs are usually about his breakups. And he's had many. --susie
  • I LOVE that song. My dad used to play it LOUD when we were growing up and it used to scare my youngest sister. So when she got married, for the father/daughter dance, she had that one played. I always think of my dad when I hear it.--Sarah

Elton John's 'Philadelphia Freedom' is about his friend Billie Jean King when she played on a tennis team called the Philadelphia Freedoms.

Also, Elton's 'Someone Saved My Life Tonight' is about a girl he was engaged to before he started his music career.  He was told he was no good at music and pressured by family to get married and 'get a real job.'  The girl's dad owned a business like a pickle factory or something weird like that lol and and Elton {well actually real name back then was Reginald Dwight) was supposed to work there.  Some of his closest friends convinced him not to and the rest is history.

Like I mentioned in the Carly Simo topic, Anticipation was written about how she felt while waiting for her hot date with Cat Stevens.  That has always cracked me up, I guess because Cat Stevens is not the first person I think of when I think hot date.

  • Shadow and the Fire Cat (if I remember the name of the album correctly) was out when I was around 12 or so. At the time I thought he was a real cutie pie... Looking at the inside pic, OMG. REM's "Choosing My Religion" is about the pressure Michael Stipes felt about being forced to "come out". He did not think it was anyone's business, yet the music community and other gay advocates were pressuring him to admit he was gay. He wasn't ashamed, he just wanted to be private about his life. It's a great song though, regardless of how it came about.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Oops, the song is Losing my Religion, not choosing my religion~amie
  • Hi Amie!! Nice to see you over here. I feel like I SHOULD have known that, but didn't. I cracked up recently when the media jumped all over his ''official'' coming out (or something). It had to have been a ploy to get publicity for the new record. REM is one of my favorite groups - particularly their earlier stuff. --susie

Of course "American Pie" is about Buddy Holly.

"You're So Vain" I believe is about Warren Beatty. Mick Jagger sang background vocals.

Wings' "Band on the Run" is about Mcartney's jail time for pot posession.

I thought "Puff the Magic Dragon" was about pot too. LOL

"Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd is about bandmate Syd Barrett who was institutionalized.

"Woolly Bully" was about a cat.

Paul McCartney wrote "Hey Jude" as "Hey Jules," a song meant to comfort John Lennon's son Julian as his parents were getting a divorce. He changed the title to "Jude" which came from a character in Oklahoma the musical.  Hey Jude is my favorite Beatles song.
