Topic: My grandma's rum ball recipe (yeah, it's a holiday tradition) LOL!!!

Additional Comments: This is a recipe my grandmother got from the S.F. Chronicle in the early 60's.
1 6 oz. pkg of chocolate chips (semi-sweet) Same as one cup.
1/2 cup granulated sugar
3 T light Karo Syrup
1/2 cup of spiced rum (do not substitute). Meyers or any spiced rum will do.
2-1/2 cups of finely crushed vanilla wafers. (They really need to be crushed fine).
1 cup finely chopped walnuts (again super fine)
(Sugar to roll balls in).

Melt chocolate over hot water or in microwave. Stir in 1/2 cup of sugar and the syrup. Blend in rum. Combine the wafer crumbs and nuts. Add chocolate mixture and mix well. If the mixture seems too dry add a smidge more rum. My grandmother always did. Form into 1-inch balls and roll in sugar. Let ripen in covered container. This may sound silly, but let them sit in that closed container for a day before you eat them.

Makes 4 1/2 dozen (Plenty to share)........ :-) I know this recipe is more Christmas like, but hey, I am home bored and sick. You won't get any recipes from me in December.
I am allergic to chocolate and I even eat a few of these every year.

Sounds great, thank you!  I have to make something for a cookie exchange.  This is it.  I have a great recipe for rum cake if anyone is interested.  No chocolate in it, Lisa!

Lisa, I know what else you will use the Rum for , since you have a cold LOL :)

well I don't do alcohol any more. But years ago I worked at Mervyn's. Someone made Rum balls and they were in the stock room. We employees would go back there and eat some. I did not know the Rum is added after and not cooked thru. You could feel it!

Well Rosebud who ran the Mens dept. had quite a few. She liked her liquor! Her cheeks got red! She had fun, LOL

I think that was the last time I had Rum balls.

Lisa, I hope you get to feeling well soon.  These sound good.  Been a while since I made anything like truffle or rum balls.  Don't know if I have ever used the spiced rum, but I love it.  Hope I get time to try these.  Feel better!

I love handed-down recipes, thanks for sharing. Even though I don't eat sweets, I like making things for others.  I've tasted rum balls before but never knew they had chocolate in 'em. And they don't have to be cooked, another plus!

  • I don't eat sweets either, but this is a wonderful gift idea. My grandmother used to put them in those Christmas like tins and give them to all of us.. My husband loves them and was sad when my grandmother died 1) because he loved her and 2) he LOVED her RUM balls :-)) Lisa P
  • Aww, you should make a batch for your sweet hubby when you're feeling better. My husband loved my grandmother's cooking too, I make some of her recipes. And speaking of those tins, I used to collect the vintage ones and still do when I come across one. I've given away most of mine. They do make special gifts filled with treats./Catrin

Far out!!  I dug until I found my Brandy Balls recipe.  Exactly the same except I used 1 cup of powdered sugar and 2 Tab. cocoa, instead of chocolate chips! And brandy, of course!! Pretty much the same so I imagine you could use any booze.

Funny story...well, vaguely amusing...My brother in law who is super religious and a total teetotaler came to our house for dinner, without my sister.  I don't know, business travel or some such.  So, I put these Brandy Balls out along with a bunch of other cookies.  I told him ''there's brandy in these.''  Those were the only ones he ate!!!  He must have had five or six!!!  I often wonder if he would have chowed down on them if my sister was there!  Somehow, I doubt it!!

I'm so sorry you're sick, Lisa!  I know how bored you must be if you're feeling a bit better! But, gads, if this crap can come back it's important that you give it every chance to be really, really gone!!!!  Hang in there!  (((hugs)))

  • Okay, my grandmother is rolling over in her grave. LOL!! Yes, you can use any booze, but it's the spiced rum that makes them special. Oh, and the granulated sugar gives them that extra special touch, not powdered sugar :((( See if I share a recipe without a ran with you peeps again.... LOL!!! Lisa P
  • That should be *rant* :-) Lisa P
  • Heavens!! I didn't mean to insult grandma!!!! I guess because I'm a brandy drinker the brandy pulled me in! To the dark side, perhaps?? LOL eom fuzzwuzz
  • Well, you can make them the way you want to in your home. LOL!!! Lisa P

Gasp!  Allergic to chocolate!!!!!  The rum balls sound yummy.

In case anyone is interested, the substitution for rum vs. rum flavoring (extract) is 1/2 cup rum = 1 Tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons of extract.

  • I am allergic to so many things it's a joke! We don't substitute my grandmas recipe :-)) Lisa P
  • Thanks that is good to know, in case you have any kids around or non drinkers, like me ! ~~

Mine is very similar, except for the melted chocolate. My recipes calls for cocoa.  I love this time of year as there are so many great Holiday goodies to look forward to.

  • My aunt made this one with cocoa once, but it was more dry. This one is like little fudge balls. Lisa P
