The 20 year old daughter of a co-worker of mine who is a college sophomore was raped in the middle of the night, in her apartment bedroom. She was asleep, awoke in the dark to the rapist putting his hand over her mouth. He drugged her somehow with a rag soaked in some chemical over her face. She woke up after he was gone, called 911 and it was confirmed he raped her :(. Her room mate was asleep and didn't hear anything. He got in by prying open the kitchen window.
Thank the Lord he didn't kill her. He is still on the loose. My poor friend is so distraught she had to take a temporary leave of absence from work. She has 5 kids, this daughter is the second oldest.
As the mother of a 16 year old daughter who is starting to look in to colleges, this scares me so much. I am smart enough to know it happens anywhere, but lately it seems like the college girls have been hit pretty hard by these sickos.

Message: Having just taken my final in Sociology of Deviance, I can tell you that that is one of the PRIME ages of rape victims. I won't even go into the statistics, but suffice it to say, I shared them with my daughter hopeing to scare the bejeeezies out of her. Okay - yes I will give the stats - girls ages 12-18 - most likely candidates for rape (60% of rapes on that age). It's sick...and makes me angry!!! I'll keep your friend in my thoughts and prayers!!!!
Thanks everyone, I thought about her all last night and this morning. I did talk to my daughter about this (my 16 year old), because I think it is important she knows these things happen. As it turns out, the kitchen window was slightly ajar, so he just pushed it open and went into the apartment.
I have heard that actual crime statistics in college towns/on campus is much higher than most people know, a lot of covering up happens so that parents will continue to send their children and $$$$. I know this case did not make the news, and it happened at a major university in our state.
Oh my gosh, what a nightmare....can't even imagine.
good thoughts go out to her.

Message: Several years ago when I lived in Georgia, there was a serial rapist who targeted college girls in a particular neighborhood. It was actually one of the nicer neighborhoods in town, not the kind of place you'd expect that to happen. It went on for years before the finally caught the guy and put him away for life. It's easy to think that kind of thing will never happen to you or someone you know, but the truth is it could happen to anyone. What a heartbreaking experience for that young girl and her family. Life will never be the same.

Message: This makes me sick! It's happened on our campuses lately too. Our one school is so dark and wooded. They think it's often another student that knows the girl's schedule. It's so sad! I hope she gets the help she will need.

Message: Oh Mandy, Mandy, Mandy! it is horrible! You knows what is strange, on the way home from work, I was thinking of you! Your name popped up in my head, isn't that odd, then you are posting here!
My daughter is in college, this scares the crap out of me! Even tho she is in a small college, and Christian and far away from Downtown, anything can happen. I told her to always walk with someone at night. Do the buddy thing!
I guess the best thing we can do is teach them what to do, some self defense that sort of stuff. But we don't want to make them so nervous!
Let us know, if you find out any more info!
Take care.
