On a very busy, curvy two-lane road, where traffic is usually around 55-60 mph....
I came down a hill and around a curve, and there was this tiny puppy frollicking in traffic. I nearly hit him. So I pulled over right away, and he turned around and came flopping down the road at me.
I'm pretty sure he's a dump-ee. He's barely old enough to be away from his mother, so if someone had gone out and adopted him, I doubt they would have let him get out there in traffic like that. Plus, he had that disoriented "I just got dumped" look on his face. And he has some issues with his ears - you don't go out and get a brand new puppy and then let him run around with grody ears. Still, I will check. But I'm betting he's a dump-ee.
So of course I had to scoop him up.... You don't leave a puppy there playing in traffic like that! I estimate he had about ten minutes left to live.
So of course the kids are ecstatic. Cameron and Stella were all, "oooh, PUPPY!". They are animal lovers so that didn't surprise me. I told them up-front that we are NOT keeping this puppy. We are going to find his owner or find him a new home.
But then the look on William's face.... Oh, no. I expected the other two to be enthralled, but William has never liked dogs. He's afraid of them. We have an older, arthritic, non-kid-loving dog named Bob. Bob puts up with the kids, and William has learned that Bob will not hurt him. But they are not friends. He basically has nothing to do with the kids. And William is afraid of all other dogs, so I've never considered getting a second one.
But.... the look on his face... he was just amazed at this tiny little dog. Crap.
Crap crap crap.
Well, all of my babies are potty-trained, I don't work outside the home, school is going great for the boys, I'm kinda bored anyway...
So I don't know. I might have a new puppy. Really it depends on William. After school today I'm going to see if he's still amazed with the puppy. Stella's playing with him right now. Same way she used to play with Steve, who by the way she STILL asks about... so yeah, that is pulling on my heartstrings, too.

Message: Oh ...Lost & Found would be a great name for him!! : ) My daughters children are afraid of dogs in general, but they love my Lulu!! I think a puppy maybe won't be as frightning as a big dog!! Thank goodness for people like you. My trkdrvr see alot of strays while truckin and it breaks his heart. I do not understand abandoning pets. Let us know how it all works out.
Well, William doesn't seem as enthralled as he did this morning. But the minute Cameron got in the car, he asked, ''Where's my puppy?'' so I showed him that we brought the puppy with us. Then he said, "I want to hold my puppy!". So he held the puppy all the way home. I can NOT say no to those big brown eyes! (Cameron's, I mean) And Stella is so happy to have a pet again.
William seems okay with him, but he just got home so what he wants to do is play his Leapster and decompress from being at school all day. LOL Typical man.
I took him in Target with me. We needed puppy food, and I didn't want to leave him at home alone and I was not leaving him in the car.... (OMG, do I need a dog-sitter now???) So there I was, after years of making fun of women who carry little dogs around.... and the puppy cried when I put him in the shopping cart. So yeah. I carried him around Target. LOL! I got a LOT of attention!
So yeah. We have a puppy.
And when I was getting all that attention, I picked people's brains. I'm hearing those "puppy pad" things work well? The Arm n Hammer things that supposedly attract the puppy to pee on them? So I guess I'll get some of those. I wanted to ask input here before buying them.

Good thing it was you that found him. I will never get how people treat animals so horribly! Good lucking finding him a home.
Highway or Freeway, may be a good name for him? I don't know maybe those are corny?

Message: Oh yeah, you definitely have a new puppy! When I found my little stray kitty Robin, my first plan was to find a home for him. Of course 12 years later I still haven't found that home!

Message: Bless you for helping him. You are really something else, Emmy.
OMG! That is the cutest little puppy face! Yep - sounds like you got yourself a new pet, should William maintain his interest. It's actually nice for you that the decision to keep the puppy is basically up to him, whether he knows it or not. : ) It's been long enough since you lost Steve, so it's time for a new pet. Clearly, you are a guardian angel to animals, since strays seem to seek you out! LOL!
P.S. Earl is the perfect name! You could have your own TV show - "My Dog is Earl."
Take him to a vet right away. You never know what mites or bugs the dog might have, being dumped like that. You don't want the kids to get anything. list him with the local humane society just in case some is looking for him. Also they may be able to help you with shots and such. Is he eating ok? If you decide to keep him, get him good dry puppy, not adult food.
Maybe giving him a bath with help clean him up. But is ears might have problems so you would want that checked if you keep him. Now days alot of people do the crate training. We did for this dog, not the other dog. But it does help them to learn potty training. we were lucky, I had a area outside I laid down gravel and had her go there. Every hour or so we would go out and say *go potty, go potty* and when she did, we would clap and say *good girl* so now everytime unless it rains hard, she goes to her spot.

Message: Good for you Emmy. Picking up that baby just saved his life. I would have done the same thing. I have one of those (strays) on my patio right now watching The View. I found him at a festival I was at, he was so scared and sad. That was eight years ago, and as I said, he's on the patio watching The View, waiting on me to come back and watch with him. I think they make the best pets. Your a sweetheart for helping him. TAB

Message: Awww. Puppies are so cute. How could anybody dump a puppy by the side of a busy road? Some people!!! :( I can well imagine that all your children want to keep this little pup - and while I understand the complications of raising a puppy, I'm hoping you decide to give him a good home too! It was provident that you turned the corner and found him before he got hurt.
