Additional Comments:

So if you had a pumpkin would you do it or just go and buy the canned version and bake it.  I have a spare pumpkin, never done this before and from reading recipes I either have to puree' it or mash it.

Is it alot of work?  Bare in mind I have 2 small children that prob will be vying for Moms attention all the while I'm doing this probably. =0  I don't know how to begin to mash or puree something so I'm kinda thinking unless I'm prepared for this I should just give up and toss the pumpkin and buy a can, lol.

We made 4 pies out of our pumpkin this year.  Mr. Ingy took 2 to work for their Halloween party, another went to the neighbors, and we ate the last one.  So good!

  • I also roasted the seeds in olive oil and sea salt. Mr. Ingy doesn't like pumpkin seeds, but I love them! ~i&b
  • It's just the opposite here Ingy; he loves the seeds and I don't. I roasted them for him with olive oil, sea salt and some garlic powder....Jana

Yes, it is a lot of work and messy...but oh so worth it! I absolutely LOVED the real pumpkin pies I made for Thanksgiving years ago. Its worth at least one try and then if you don't like the mess and cleanup, then stick with canned from then on.
But I also love canned pumpkin (Libby) pie too.
If nothing else...save those seeds and roast them! That's what I did this year b/c we already have like 10 bags of frozen pumpkin.

Lots of hard work and mess. I disagree with the other poster, I would never do a real pumpkin again! I use the canned ones from Trader joes, w/o all the Additives.

I remember when I did the home made one and was all proud, but boy was I exhausted! I told my Grandma who mad pies all the time. She said to me, Hey I even use the can pumpkin, saves time! I thought if Granny uses canned thats good enough for me.

But I do not even make pies at all, just buy them. Around holidays I do make cakes, fudge and other desserts!

By all means use your pumpkin. You will never use canned pumpkin again. Here is the easiest way to do it. Wash your pumpkin with hot water. Cut it open and take out all the goop and seeds. Make sure to get all the stringy stuff too. Put the pumpkin halves in a corning or other dish with a lid (you may have to cut it in smaller pieces to make it fit and that is OK). Add about an inch of water to the dish, cover it and microwave for 15 minutes. Stick a fork in the pieces and if it doesn't go in easily cook for 5 more minutes. When cool just scoop the pumpkin into a bowl and mash. I use a potato masher. You can use it now or freeze until ready to use. If you do freeze make sure to drain all the water before adding to your pie.

  • I am assuming you have a ''pie'' pumpkin? The big ones are not as good for pies. You can use it but add more sugar to your recipe...Jana
  • I do have a pie pumpkin. Thats what peaked my interest, I didn't even notice when I bought it. I will be brave and do it. Thanks Jana. I will let you know how it turns out! =) - Joanne

I always use real pumpkin. we don't even have the option of canned pumpkin over here. Just chop up the pumpkin and boil it for a while - maybe 20-30 mins & then just mash away- just like you would to do mashed potato - you could even try using a hand held blender to mash it. I love pumpkin pie! nic

I've always used canned, but I've always wanted to do the real pumpkin thing...I'd go for it...

By the way...I couldn't even find a pumpkin over this past week. Luckily, I have a big ceramic one...

  • Your kidding, no pumpkins? We don't have one, because we are sick, but they have a ton left at the stores. Lisa P
  • I noticed the range of available pumpkins was down this year. Even walmart who normally has them all over the store only had them in the garden center and they looked like they had had better days. - Joanne
  • Man there are oddles of them all around here! tho I did notice the big ones, were picked too early and sort of green. We got a med. one and a small white one. ~~Bon
