It's hard to believe baby is almost 11 months old. After a week in the hospital end of August, we came home with an NG tube in place & that's how he got most of his food.  We now have periods of tube in & tube out.  He has not gained much weight in the last month or so, but he hasn't had as much tube feeding & is doing a little more on his own.

The whole thing is such a mystery.  No one really has an idea about why he doesn't like to eat & no one has found anything wrong with him.  We saw a developmental specialist team & they said he is fine, where he should be or a little ahead developmentally.  I think that was my doctor's big concern.  He likes finger food & will eat just about anything you put in front of him, but he does not like to be fed with a spoon.  If he would eat from a spoon, then it would be easy for me to get extra calories in him, but I think somewhere along the line he just developed a real aversion to the spoon & anyone messing with his face.  Someone was always trying to give him food, medicine, put a tube up his nose..........  I think he wants an all clear around his face.

He probably weighs around 16 pounds, which is not much for 1 year, but that's still almost triple his birth weight, which I always thought was the gold standard.  He is long & has big hands & feet, so he is growing.  We see the doctor next week.  It's weird, because I haven't been to ANY doctor in almost 2 months.  For a long time we were there every 2 weeks.  Other than being small, you wouldn't look at him I think he was not healthy.  He is crawling all over the place & gets into everything.  He can stand on his own, but he hasn't really tried to take steps too much.  As adventurous as he is, he is very cautious, but I bet he'll be walking soon.  I think one day he's just going to get up & walk, no practice, he'll just go.

I've had lot of long days & nights.  There were times with the tube feedings that I felt like that was all I did.......feedings, make formula, wash feeding equipment, give medicine.  I hope the worst is behind us.  No matter what, he has been a real blessing & it's been a joy to watch him develop.  He definitely has his own personality.

cc, I'm thinking it used to be a lot longer that babies didn't even eat solid food.   In fact, from some of the studies I've read, they think that having babies eat solid foods too soon has been really bad for them and made them unhealthy.   I don't know what's been going on, was he refusing the formula?  (That stuff used to make me gag when I smelled it, and I never understood how babies could drink it!)   Have they checked him at all inside the mouth, to be sure there's no physical reason the spoon is uncomfortable for him?

cc, I would take him to a cranio-sacral therapist, and get a treatment done on him.   They say that babies have a lot of trauma to their heads when they are born, and the plates kind of bunch up or something.  But I think one treatment can fix the plates, and also the neck.  From what I've read, there are many, many different problems that can be caused by the problem with the plates (in the skull) if they aren't aligned perfectly right.  They don't do anything but barely touch the baby, so it's not like they're actually forcing any parts of their bodies around.  Let me know what area you're in, and I'll have a friend of mine check for you, and try to find someone in your area that should be good.   There are two different schools of thought on it, and one is much better than the other, is why I mention that.   She can tell by seeing the classes they've taken (on the website) which ones are probably better.   (I mean, it's not like she knows them and gets a kickback or anythint!)   What this does, besides realigning the plates of the skull, is to correct anything wrong in the cerebrospinal fluid system.  They are trained to feel the pulsing of the CSF by just barely touching the skin.   I don't know what they do, zacly, but it certainly did some miracles for me!    And I really think this might be a good thing for him!   In my area, it usually runs about $60 an hour for a treatment.  Insurance pays for it sometimes, if you can get your primary care to prescribe it (not a problem for me), BUT!  Some of the offices don't take it because they're small and do their own paperwork, and they don't want to be bothered (and I'm sure not having to fill out the paperwork keeps their prices down some too).   From what I understand, you CAN fill out your own paperwork for the insurance place.   But if you only go for one treatment, that shouldn't be a problem anyway!

Wow.  No wonder you haven't been posting lately.  You've had your hands full!  Glad to hear Michael is doing better.  Maybe as he gets a little older he'll be eating a little more and more.  He'll be fine.  You'll see.  At least he's good with the finger foods.  You shouldn't have any problem with him eating carrot sticks, raw broccoli, cheese sticks, celery sticks, etc., so you won't have to worry about him not getting his veggies and the stuff that's good for him.  Marina has been eating raw broccoli since she was about one and a half.  I remember we were at a restaurant at the coast when she was about one and a half, and she was eating raw broccoli from my salad when the waitress came by our table.  When we were leaving there were about three or four waitresses on break outside in an upstairs balcony, and they were saying good-bye to Marina, and one of them asked, ''Is that the broccoli eater?''!  I guess our waitress had gone and told the other waitresses that this little one year old was sitting at the table eating broccoli!  Anyway, that is such good news about Michael.  Keep me up to date on his progress.  And post pictures if you can!
