Topic: We're lucky they didn't do this to us, frankly

Additional Comments: P&G is now literally killing Guiding Light. They've ripped out the sets, thrown the actors into the woods, and started to assassinate the characters. Rikcy Paul Goldin has just left, and Beth Ehlers is sure to follow. On ATWT, the tide is also turning in this direction. We're kinda lucky, AW went out pretty much heads held high.

I don't see that AW was treated any better than GL.  P&G planned, for yrs, to dismantle AW & make it unwatchable.  Now they've done the same w/GL & ATWT.  I said for yrs that the fans of ATWT & GL needed to embrace what they had when it was good (not excellent, but still good) because it COULD easily be worse.  Now it is.

AW had a lot of blame put where it didn't belong, since EPs & HWs, just like now w/ATWT & GL, didn't have the power to change P&G's mind about the value of AW & soaps in general.  They liked having the fans blaming EPs & HWs for their decisions--as though any of those EPs or HWs had any power to change the course of P&G's agenda.

Remember, P&G told the fans, cast & crew that there were NO PLANS to end production, just week(s) before the official announcement was made that AW had only 6-8 weeks of production left!

  • I stopped watching ATWT when they made Emily a prostitute, it was too much after the big summer slasher story. So now, my only soap is AW (I saved all the SoapNet episodes), well and Ghost Hunters. eom
  • Newfymom: I must admit, I'm thisclose to taking ATWT off my taping schedule & going w/OLTL--it is SO much better! I'm SO tired of what is currently going on at ATWT, it makes the prostitution storyline look like Shakespeare! And MB has 'quit', so I thiink that the end is near. Something I don't think I want to witness--again. eom
  • OLTL
  • Oh no, you mean ATWT got worse? Yikes! eom/Newfymom
  • jeanne: In my area OLTL is on at 1pm, the same time as ATWT. There was a time when it was a difficult decision, but that is becoming less & less true. eom
  • Sorry, RB, I totally disagree! AW was still a great show when it went off! The show was awesome! Totally different thing than what's going on at GL! TOTALLY different! AW wasn't cut into pieces and tortured like they're doing to GL! There were still real sets and REAL cameras! And they didn't have pregnant people filming outside in the cold rain! Sorry! Totally different! fee
  • ICAM, the show was great & shouldn't have ended. Yes, it was turning around in the ratings game. However, it was still a shell of its great self at the end. There was a lot of silliness, like a lot of soaps have done w/their final days on the air. There WERE set issues, for yrs! One of the biggest 'issues' about sets was P&G blaming JFP for an expensive, 'outdoor' style set that cost millions. As though JFP had carte blanche! That set was something P&G insisted on doing to rip off ER. Those cost overruns were approved by people higher up than JFP & they knew that. I never, for one minute, believed that JFP could just order something without the bean counters at P&G knowing about every penny! If P&G didn't want to spend so much, then why did they mandate something that they knew was going to cost a fortune? eom
  • PS: It also isn't true that there weren't location shoots done or issues over than as well. In the early 90's P&G ended almost all location shoots, siting them as a major reason for inflated budgets. They authorized LOTS of location shoots over the yrs., for all their soaps. P&G wasn't the only soap owner to do that. In the early to mid-80's everyone was doing them, following GH's success with them in the late 70's & early 80's. eom
