Just thought I would post a comment about the economy.  For all the gloom and doom we see on TV, I was not seeing that at all last week.  I just happened to visit two shopping malls, one in San Diego and one in Escondido, CA and I could not believe the shoppers.  Had to drive around for a while in both of them to get a parking spot and then the shoppers were just flooding the stores and buying things like even at higher priced stores like Nordstroms.

Maybe there were a lot of tourists or familes getting a head start on school, but I was shocked at what I saw.  I know from the news and newpaper, that there certainly are big problems going on, many forclosesures and bankruptcies but wow the shoppers are sure out there.  Maybe they are just maxing out their credit cards before they file bankruptcy.  Any ideas as to what may be happening?

check out www.nationalpriorities.org to see what various types of government spending might buy if used otherwise.  For example, the cost of the war in Iraq per capita in my city alone would buy health insurance for a year for more than the population of my city.  Pretty dramatic, especially when people are losing health coverage.  Also shows what that money could buy in terms of teachers, etc.  Very interesting.

Could those shoppers you saw be out spending their newly received gov.refund checks to give a boost to the economy? Just a thought!

San Diego is very popular with canadians and here in Britich Columbia the economy is humming and with the dollar at par with the US dollar it is possible that a lot of Canadians from BC and Alberta are driving down to California to shop as they think they get better deals there.

My son and daughter-in-law and their two kids left yesterday to do the *Cascade Tour* ending up in Seattle where I am sure they will be doing as much shopping as Canadian Customs allows.

Perhaps some of the cars in the parking lots at those malls were rentals from people who flew into San Diego.

  • Glad things are going well there. Our home is in Lake Havasu City, AZ, and there are a lot of Canadians coming down and winter homes there./mm

Well, Janie, we got a nice surprise in the mail today. My husband is a retired salary GM employee. GM is dropping all our health insurance as of the first of the year. They can't do that with hourly employees because they have a union. My husband and I are very frugal and it looks like we will be tightening our belts even more. Sigh.

  • Every since GM dropped their insurance for the retirees my husband and I have been holding our breath that his health insurance will be dropped also. I think all companies will do that. It will be devastating for the families who have pre-existing conditions because no other insurance company will take them. My husband has cancer and we are very worried about not having insurance in the future. There should be a law against companies dropping their retired employees from their insurance when they were told, in writing, that they would be insured when retired. / Sammie
  • The thing is, Sammie, they can't take away the insurace for hourly employees because they have a union. They only have a problem if GM goes bankrupt. Then it is goodbye pension as well as insurance./mm
  • mm, That is just terrible about GM dropping your health insurance. It should be illegal to do that and the government should step it and stop it or at least cover. Don't you have medicare? We are about the same age and I have Secure Horizons who has partnered with AARP. I had a routine eye exam today and it was a $30 copay. I'm in an HMO but have been very happy with my coverage but then I haven't been sick just routine maintainance stuff. J.
  • Yes, thankfully we have medicare. We are looking into the AARP supplement. GM is increasing my husband's pension by $300 a month, but I checked my teacher's insurance (I taught for fourteen years) and it would be almost $600 a month to get the medicare supplement along with the dental/vision. I have mixed emotions. I know GM is in a bad way. I was more pro union than my husband, and still think they do a lot of good, but they need to realize that their members must sacrifice some or the company will go under./mm
  • mm. AARP supplement can be around 200 a month for good coverage. Would you consider an HMO? Like I said Secure Horizons has been good for me and it's only 40 a month. J.
  • Me again. The only problem with Secure Horizons is that you have to join an HMO. Fortunately for me, I know who the good doctors are in my community from working in health care. But I really can recommend it. Hope things work out for you. Are you enjoying Prescott or aren't you there yet. I would love to visit there but can't with the dogs and lots of stuff going on, now. But I have become a 'stuck in the mud' here at home but it is lovely so far, only one bad heat wave in June. J.
  • I would consider an HMO, but in Havasu, I'm not sure what is available. Yep, we've been in Prescott since July 1. Will be here until September 1. We are about 3 blocks from the courthouse square and they have concerts on the lawn at least one night a week and sometimes two. The courthouse is one of those beautiful old Greek Revival buildings. We are just two blocks from the library which is absolutely wonderful./mm
  • What happens if the company goes bankrupt? Don't all retirees lose their pension? fee
  • That is exactly why the unions should wake up and give some concessions regarding health care./mm

Malls are virtually empty during the week where I live.  The movie theaters are also empty, with the exception this week of the Batman movie.  My kids said it was 90% full tonight (it's a Tuesday) and it was a $3.00 theater.  There aren't lines at the restaurants at all.  If anyone uses Restaurants.com, they have been having 70% off their coupon prices, which means the restaurants are hurting for customers and will sell 25 dollar gift certificates for 3 bucks.  So while  I guess some areas might still be hopping. Mine isn't.

Janie, I just got from shopping at the White Oaks Mall in Springfield, Il. and I was surprised that there were not very many shoppers out.  I shopped at Macy's, Bergners, and Linens & Things, and it was very easy getting around because there were very few shoppers.  I love it when it is like that.  I was able to park close to all three stores. I don't know if I just hit a lucky day, or if in this part of the country the people are not buying.  I am sure the Mall is packed on a week end, that is why I go during the week.

People with families have to cut back on their spending with gas prices so high.  More people will be shopping at Walmart instead of the better stores, and eating at home instead of eating out.

  • Sammie, I went to the malls on Tues and Fri, not on the weekend so I thought they wouldn't be crowded but they were. My daughter, grandkids and I went to Red Lobster for dinner on Sun evening and again, it was really crowded and we had to wait about 15 - 20 minutes for a table. That's not an inexpensive place to eat, either. Maybe like the honeybees that we still have a lot of, we still have a lot of spenders with money out here. Who knows?
