Topic: SARAH PALIN AGAIN---SHE DOESN'T LOOK VERY PRESIDENTIAL -----

on the cover of Newsweek Magazine.  While I have a mostly conservative point of view, I don't know what to think about her and how good she would be for the country.

I have a friend who lives in Alaska who visited here recently and she said they love her there and the main reason she resigned her governership was because there were so many lawsuits against her that she was just sick of it.

I know she is not happy with the cover of Newsweek and from what I have read and watched, it was taken from a Runner's Magazine photo that she posed for, not a pose for Newsweek.  So now there is backlash against the Democrats who are believed to be behind this photo cover in order to make her look bad.  Would the picture of Michelle O or any male politician be shown  like this?

What are your thoughts?

My thought is that Sarah Palin posed for this picture- she obviously thought that posing that way was not beneath the dignity of her office- she chose to present herself a certain way.  What I wonder is how such a pose with a male politician would be received. I can't imagine McCain or Biden or Obama or any serious politician posing that way. The worst thing about this woman is how far she is setting our sex back- every time she shows up and opens her mouth.

The cover is disrespectful since it is used out of context- but I am sure Sarah is absolutely thrilled with it. She is making a career of whining- wrote a whole book about it apparently- more stuff for her to blog about while she is out making a difference for Alaska.

Even though I do not like Sarah Palin...I found this cover totally insulting, degrading and so childish it would more suit Mad Magazine. Whatever issues I have with her...and they are many...she didn't deserve this.

I don't like Palin. I think she is divisive and lacks the intelligence to be president and is blissfully unaware of how unintelligent she is. I also think she lacks compassion and neither cares nor wants to care about anyone who is different from her. Like too many conservatives, she seems to believe anyone who disagrees is simply wrong and people who don't have money are simply lazy. Simple people over simplify.
That being said, she did pose for this picture, even if it wasn't for Newsweek. Were I her I would have worn long sweat pants. Of course, if I had thighs like that I'd wear short shorts to the office. Still, Newsweek should have used a more appropriate picture. That being said, how many times were we treated to pictures of Bill Clinton's fat, white thighs while he jogged to McDonald's? A sight I could have happily done without.
Ultimately, the real problem is that people buy this stuff. They buy the magazines, the shows on television get ratings. There's money to be made and these media outlets know what the public will buy.

  • Again, thank you. This time for reminding me of all those unflattering photos of Bill Clinton. So much for *There is no way in Hell that would happen to Michelle or probably to a male politician, either.* (posted below) How quickly some of us forget when the shoe is on the other foot. The same can be said about Letterman vis-s-vis that horrid *joke* McCain made about the CHILD Chelsea Clinton's APPEARANCE. eom/D
  • Typo alert - that should be *vis-a-vis* eom/D
  • Mrs. B. Harris...well said, lady! I agree.
  • Nice post, Mrs. BH. Well said. (eom) Mandi

I find the Newsweek cover photo of Palin to be somewhat insulting. I think it was a tasteless choice on their part.

It was also unnecessary to make her look foolish and trivial this way, since she makes enough of a fool of herself every time she opens her mouth. What she wears and how she looks in it is irrelevant.

You must hear from different Alaskans than I do, since "loved" is not at all the way I hear her described.

I haven't yet had a chance to read the article.

  • Palin posed for this photo for the cover of Runner Magazine. Not Newsweek./mm
  • I know. And it was a tasteless choice on Newsweek's part to use it. eom/D
  • I'm absolutely no fan of Palin's but I think it was tacky and unexcusable for Newsweek to use that photo. But I don't think it's limited to one party or the other. There was an equally tasteless photo of President Obama in swim trunks, sans shirt that ran on the cover of another news(?) magazine earlier, and there was the photo controversy of Michelle exiting the helicopter in shorts a couple weeks ago. It seems as if the media will use anything to stir up a controversy or get people talking. Wouldn't it be nice if just once in a while they would actually stick to the news./Cricket

What she wears and how she looks in it is irrelevant. Excellent point! I could not agree more. No one has to make Sarah Palin look ridiculous, she does it all on her own...every time she opens her mouth. (eom) Mandi

I'm almost certain that the cover photo on Newsweek taken from the Runner's Magazine was published intentionally to make SP look unprofessional and seen in a bad way. I can understand her being upset about it. I don't think she is presidential material and I don't believe she should even consider running in 2012, but I do think she is treated horribly and unfairly by the media. And we all saw how Lyrica's photo of MO was received here on this sight, so we all know the answer to that question. There is no way in Hell that would happen to Michelle or probably to a male politician, either. Sarah Palin has been trashed and ridiculed more than any politician that I have seen in my life. I don't know why she even tries to be in the public eye any more. A ton of critics are there to attack her every time she shows her face.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Can you imagine what would happen to David Letterman if he made a tasteless joke about one of the Obama children?/mm
  • Lyrica was trashed for her nasty comments, not for posting the picture. Michelle Obama isn't a politican. She does not hold an elected office and as far as I know isn't running for one. As for Letterman, the jokes about Palin's daughter were tacky, but it wasn't nearly as crude, nasty and cruel as the tasteless joke U.S. Sen. John McCain made about Chelsea Clinton. ''Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father.'' Letterman gets PAID to make crude, tacky and tasteless jokes. What's McCain's excuse? Also, what's there to say about the Obama girls? They're children. (Mrs. B. H.)
  • Thank you, Mrs. BH, for once again providing some perspective. eom/D
  • Well, Mrs. BH, that's another McCain quote I haven't heard. I'm sure you can authenticate it. However, how does anyone making a tasteless joke make David Letterman's less tastelsess?/mm
  • And how are Sarah Palin's children different from President Obama's children? Also, the joke that David Letterman made was viewed by milliions. The ALLEGGED joke made my Senator McCain was not. Of course when someone like you posts it on then Internet then it does become public. And the slur against Chelsea Clinton (Janet Reno as well) becomes public./mm
  • This is the first I have heard about what McCain said about Chelsea. Does anyone know when and where he said that? / Sammie
  • Sammie, I would have little respect for someone who would tell a joke like that and little respect for someone who would repeat it./mm
  • It was at a Republican party senate fundraiser in 1998. At the time most of the news media deemed it too crude to report, although the Associated Press had the item. Apparently McCain gave Pres. Clinton a written apology later, which the Washington Post reported (while still not printing specifics of the *joke*). Here's one article about it from across the pond - http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2008/sep/02/women.johnmccain eom/D
  • Here's a reference to it in an exerpt from The Arizona Republic - *McCain has described himself as a
  • Drat those quotation marks ... McCain has described himself as a ''wise ass.'' His edgy and sarcastic sense of humor helped cement his media image as a straight-talking ''maverick '' and made him a hit with late-night TV hosts such as Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien. Other times, his mouth has gotten him in trouble. Back when he entered politics, he once referred to the Arizona retirement community of Leisure World as ''Seizure World.'' During the Clinton administration, it was a joke about presidential daughter Chelsea Clinton's looks that prompted criticism. eom/D
  • *
  • I didn't say that Letterman wasn't tacky or tasteless. But LETTERMAN is a comic. It is his job to be tacky and tasteless. McCain is a United States senator. If you don't see the difference in the two then I really can't make it any clearer. Thanks D, for authenticating McCain's 'alleged' comment. Trust me, I looked it up before I posted just to make sure it wasn't some urban legend. McCain never denied it and even apologized for it. Chelsea was a teenager at the time. As for children, from what I heard about Letterman, he thought Palin's daughter Bristol was with her when he made that stupid joke, not the younger daughter. Eitherway , it was out of line and he was criticized for it. But let's remember, Letterman is not a spokesman for the Democratic party, nor is he in any position of influence with Democrats or liberals in general. I still don't know what jokes you want people to make about the Obama girls. They're still little girls. Until one of them gets knocked up, what is there to say? Here's the real problem. Republicans can dish it out but they cant take it. Ann Coulter wrote in her book ''Godless: The Church of Liberalism,'' that a group of New Jersey widows whose husbands died in the World Trade Center act'' as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them.'' and that ''I've neer seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much.'' I never heard any conservatives admonish her for that hateful statement. Hell, her people bought the book in droves. Again Letterman is a comedian, an individual who's job it is to say mean things so that others will laugh. Coulter, while not a spokeswoman for the Republican party, is certainly a standard bearer for and a leader in the conservative movement. (Mrs. B. H.)
  • Mrs. B. H., please refresh me on just what my ''nasty comments'' were. I said that she was dressed inappropriately (which was true) and that she SEEMED to flout convention and do as she pleases (which is true). So is the truth now a nasty comment if it is the truth about a liberal?
  • Mrs. B H. You say Republicans can dish it out but can't take it. Well, you evidently never heard the malicious rumor (which I won't repeat) about one of Senator McCain's children. John McCain does not deny rumors. He'd spend all his time denying rumors if he did. I've tried to point out that for someone to address a malicious rumor dignifies the rumor and gives it more exposure. So that is not a wise tactic. And as for the Arizona Republic, I lived it Arizona for nineteen years and this newspaper's hatred of JOhn McCain is well known. And do you know why? Because he is a Republican who is often bi-partisan. I probably should know that certain people on this board would take a post about Sara Palin and make it a diatribe against John McCain./mm
  • Really, mm, I imagine we all heard that rumor about one of McCain's children. Certainly if anyone has heard it, it's Mrs. BH - who is a reporter herself. We all know where it came from, too - the sleaziest campaign in recent history. McCain was unquestionably a victim of unscrupulous people - as we all were for eight years. That doesn't excuse the many examples of his obnoxious PUBLIC attitudes, though, and voters are entitled to know what kind of PUBLIC person he is. eom/D
  • Your comments throughout that thread, begining with the little salvo about dignity was nasty and uncalled for. As for Obama being liberal (I assume we're talking about the President, since the First Lady doesn't make policy) he's not liberal at all. If he were he'd have never made the futile attempt to compromise with Republicans. I'd have done exactly what Bush (or should I say Cheney) did and just barrel my way through. He's more of a moderate than Republicans deserve. (Mrs. B. H.)
  • MM, if we're going trade worst rumors, nothing tops the fact that the conservatives openly accused the Clintons of murder. As for John McCain, of course I read about that nastiness. But it wasn't started by the Democrats. From what I understand, that tasty little lie was spread about by the George W. Bush team. It was refuted by mainstream media, but we all know how a lie has legs. So don't blame the Democrats or the news media. That was the Republicans feeding on their own. (Mrs. B. H.)
  • Also, MM when you dragged Letterman into this I simply pointed out that when it comes to nasty comments Republican mouths are silent. (Mrs. B. H.)
  • Mrs. B. H., well thank goodness that I am the ONLY one on this board who makes nasty and uncalled for comments! Obviously all the rest of the posters' digs about Republicans are not nasty and evidently THEY are ''called for''.
  • Mrs. BH, where did I say President Obama was a liberal. As a matter of fact, where did I say anything about President Obama? You just fling things out any old which way. LOL./mm
  • Skipping all the McCain stuff....Yes, mm, I can imagine what would happen to Letterman. He would not have a job! But his lame, insincere apology was accepted,
  • Palin, in her rampant stupidity, set herself up by posing the way she did. She looked just fine in her athletic outfit, including the shorts. What made her look ridiculous was the pose she chose. And, please don't tell me she was coached by someone into standing that way. If she had more than an acorn in her head, she would have refused. (eom) Mandi

I haven't seen the latest issue of Newsweek. SNL has completely removed everything "presidential" about Sarah. The subject of wearing shorts isn't the problem-what is disturbing to me is the "no bra" look that could have at least been covered up with the other shirt Michelle was wearing at the time. All women have breasts but is flaulting them presidential?

Welllll......... yeah, a picture of Michelle O was published and I posted it above.  It showed Michelle Obama getting off Air Force One in shorts and I was greatly criticized.  However, since Palin is a Republican, I doubt you will be blasted for posting this.  At least Palin looks GOOD in shorts!  I am not impressed with her presidential qualities (if any).  She is, however, someone who commands attention but unfortunately so much of it is negative.
