Additional Comments: It was just about a year ago that I got my Garmin GPS system and was so thrilled about it I posted on this board. Well, we went to Vegas this last week for a conference and someone smashed my window and stole my Garmin (whom I called Carmen). It was my fault because I didn't take it down from the dashboard when we got back to the hotel. It happened during the night. The people at the hotel were very nice. (I always stay at the Tuscany which is off the strip.) They vacuumed the car and arranged to have someone come out and put in a new window right there. It cost us two hundred dollars and my new Garmin which I ordered yesterday cost $250 (less than the first one and better). I made a little money playing blackjack to offset the loss. Anyway, it didn't spoil our trip. My daughter says that if you have a problem that can be solved with money and you have the money, then you don't have a problem. Luckily my husband doesn't get upset about things like this. We'll go back to the Tuscany in June when we fly to Wisconsin.

I live in Wilmington DE, which is considered part of the Philadelphia suburban area. Philly police have been warning about the rampant thefts of GPS systems. They implored people to not only take them down, but to make sure to remove them from the car, and to wipe off the windshield so the suction cup mark is gone. I just hope no one mistakes the information screen built in the dash of my vehicle for a nav system...

  • Good advice, Mandy. Unfortunately I have a plastic disc that adheres to the dashboard and it's still there, event though the GPS is gone. I'll have to see if I can pry it off./mm
  • I hope you can get that disc off. I would hate to see someone break in your car again, thinking the GPS is hidden. Good luck! (eom) Mandi
  • LOL. If I can't get it off, I'll get a bobble-head doll to go on it./mm

You know, Janie, if Starbucks, or the police wanted to find that guy, they could. Chances are he has been there before and will be there again. I wrote the Tuscany Hotel and suggested that they install cameras in their parking lots and also inform guests not to leave valuables visible in the car. Interestingly, I stayed at a Choice hotel in Long Beach in April and was concerned about my car. The gal at the desk showed me how there is video surveillance in all the parking areas. BTW, my husband says that soon the GPS systems will be built into the new cars so they won't be so easy to steal.

that is awful! Just a couple weeks ago a friend of mine had his stolen while he ran into a shop in Boston. He was in the store about 10 min. and some woman came in yelling that someone's car window was being smashed. He ran outside and actually saw the punk running away with his GPS. He had too big a head start so he just called the police. He always dismounts it but figured he was just running in and would be out 15 minutes at the max. I hate people who steal, I really do! But I love your daughter's comment...smart cookie!

What a bummer, mm.  This world is full of evil and selfish people!  But your daughter is right about money.  You can always make some more.  The hotel sure helped you out.  That was great.  I had somewhat of a similar incident about 6 months ago at a Starbuck's store.  A huge white truck that was parked next to me pulled out carelessly and scraped the entire driver's side of my Solara.  I didn't see it happen and no one else said they witnessed it. but I remembered what was parked next to me.  Too bad I didn't get his/her license plate number.  The store said they couldn't do anything about it and that it happens often in that lot.  It cost $2500 for body work repairs which my AAA club insurance paid but I had $500 deductible.  Some people in this world sure need to have a "change of heart!*  Now when I go to that Starbucks, I park FAR away from other cars.  It's worth the walk.
