I wasn't sure how much faith to put into our state high court on this issue, but they made the right call! HOORAY! It's not a "family values" issue, it's an equal rights issue. So many people don't seem to understand that.
SAN FRANCISCO -- The California Supreme Court overturned a ban on gay marriage Thursday, paving the way for California to become the second state where gay and lesbian residents can marry.
The justices released the 4-3 decision, saying that domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage.
The cases were brought by the city of San Francisco, two dozen gay and lesbian couples, Equality California and another gay rights group in March 2004. They were filed after the court halted San Francisco's month-long same-sex wedding march that took place at Mayor Gavin Newsom's direction.
CNN reported that the court also said that Newsom acted illegally by approving those marriages before the issue had been settled.
Six of the seven justices on the court were appointed by Republican governors.
The state legislature has twice approved legislation to legalize gay marriage. But both measures were vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Julia, and/or whomever:
I do need some advice from you, regarding some of the specific laws of the Bible, and how to best follow them. Please help me.
I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as it suggests in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
I know that a man is allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is how does he tell? When a man asks, most women take offense.
Lev. 25:44 states that I may buy slaves from the nations that are around us. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans but not Canadians. Can you clarify?
A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:9-12), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
Lev. 21:16-23 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear lens implants.Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?
I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Message: This is a step in the right direction, but we have a long long way to go. As long as it is still aceeptable in many quarters to ridicule, demean, or outright hate gays openly and feel righteous while doing it, the job is not done.

Thumbs up.

Message: Massachusetts (where gay marriage is legal) has the lowest divorce rate in the country - so gay marriage is GOOD for hetero marriage!

Message: This is great news. I can't believe in my life time gay marriage may become lawful and best of all we may get our first black president! If only Obama were a woman.

I honestly don't see what the big deal is on gay marriage. It has nothing to do with me or my marriage. I don't see it eroding the institution of marriage in general (heterosexuals have already done a good job of that on their own). If two gay people want to marry each other, I don't see how that's anyone's business but theirs. Let them be happy. If the tables were turned and gays were the majority, I can't imagine how hurtful it would be for me to not be allowed to marry Mr. Ingy.
I think eventually gay marriage will be allowed in all states and in retrospect this whole debate will look very much like the days when blacks were told they couldn't eat at ''white'' lunch counters, etc.
