Topic: Edwards endorses Obama

Additional Comments:

Sorry I'm such a board hog, but there's just so much going on in the news today and I'd get eaten alive if I tried to post any of this on the DOOL board.  LOL!

I really thought Edwards was going to hold out until the convention.  But I'm VERY happy with his choice.  Wonder if he's hoping to get tapped for the VP position again.  I kind of hope not for the sake of his poor wife who is battling terminal cancer, but remains perennially awesome.

So ... shall we speculate more on who the potential VPs could be?

I think Edwards' endorsement would have helped more had it come just before the Ohio-Pennsylvania primaries.  But at that point, Edwards had not yet decided which candidate to support.

As far as running mates go, Obama will do what everyone else does:  choose someone based on balancing the ticket and helping attract votes in the sectors where he needs them most.  It's usually less about policy than it is about demographics.  So in Obama's case, he'll very likely choose someone who appeals to the white working class since that appears to be where Obama is weakest.  Edwards would have been a great choice for VP if he hadn't already been on a losing ticket.

  • Oh, yeah. It would have helped if he'd made a decision sooner. Maybe he didn't want to offend Hillary. : ) --susie

My first choice would be Obama-Clinton but I don't know if that is going to work out. If Hillary Clinton doesn't work out as V.P. then I would choose Bill Richardson or Wesley Clark.

  • Sadly, an Obama-Clinton ticket probably won't happen until (or unless) Hell freezes over. But how incredible it would be! I wouldn't mind seeing Joe Biden considered. He was my first choice for the Dem nod. --susie
  • Obama and Clinton on the same ticket will never happen, regardless of which is on top. ~i&b
  • Susie, I agree. I think Joe Biden would be perfect. He probably knows foreign policy better than anyone. / Vivian
  • But what can Biden (Delaware) bring to the table in terms of getting Obama elected? He's from the northeast which if I recall is not one of Obama's weakest areas. I think Richardson (New Mexico) would be a smarter choice because he could bring in the Hispanic vote and may help curb McCain's (Arizona) overall strength in the Southwest. ~i&b
  • You’re right. I wasn’t thinking straight. I really mean I think Biden would make a good Secretary of State, chief foreign affairs advisor. / Vivian
  • Biden would definitely make a good cabinet choice. ~i&b

I hope he gets Edwards' delegates.

I just had Dulé Hill (from The West Wing) in my afternoon class. He's working for Obama and stopped by to talk to the students about the importance of political activism. It was a big thrill for the students (and me!).

  • KOP, are your students very interested in politics and are they going to vote in this election? / Vivian
  • THAT IS SO COOL!!!! I love Dule Hill! Loved him on West Wing, ADORE him on Psych! There are a lot of smart people backing this Obama guy. Maybe he WOULD be a good president. (LOL!) --susie
  • About 70% of my students are VERY political, the other 30% are just trying to get their work done before America's Top Model comes on. (KOP)

I just watched part of his speech, and I really liked the nice things he had to say about Hillary Clinton. (The crowd booed when he mentioned her name though, unfortunately.) We Democrats have really got to come together or we are going to end up with McBush for president.

I would love an Obama/Edwards ticket!

  • I truly think Edwards needs to stay focused on his family right now. His lovely wife is terminal. I don't think she deserves to end her life in the VP mansion. She should be at home. JMHO. --susie
  • Since I'm not in their shoes, I don't judge their choice to continue pursuing their goals despite her illness. If they feel it's the right thing for them, then all the power to them. ~i&b

I had seen this earlier.  They said he’s going to announce it live during this hour.  I heard them say his wife wanted Hillary and he wanted Obama.  I hope Obama doesn’t choose him for VP because he lost once.  When Republicans lose once they can come back and become president later.  When Democrats lose once everyone considers them a loser.  He’s got to choose someone who’s real good on foreign affairs because people are going to say he doesn’t have enough experience.

  • ICAM! An Obama-Edwards ticket would NOT be a good match. Their number of years experience COMBINED would not be very impressive. --susie

i hope Obama chooses Sen. Diane Feinstein as his VP since i highly doubt he'd pick Hillary after she's been dissing him all this time - and i really want to see a woman in there one way or another.

  • LOVE Dianne! And she's more moderate than some of her contemporaries like Barbara Boxer and, of course, Nancy Pelosi. --susie
