In the next 36 hours, the McCain campaign will be pouring millions of dollars -- if not tens of millions -- into negative attack ads against Barack Obama.

Before John McCain accepts the Republican nomination on Thursday, his campaign has to spend every last dollar of primary funds they've raked in from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs.

Just yesterday, they aired a new negative ad in 14 swing states. His campaign manager even admitted that all McCain has to rely on is attacks, saying that for them, "This election is not about issues."

He doesn't want Americans to notice that the Republican platform is the most extreme we've ever seen -- opposing stem cell research, denying a woman's right to choose no matter what the circumstance, and continuing to spend $10 billion a month in Iraq.

With so much at stake, we can't allow another election to be determined by petty and divisive political tactics.

The McCain campaign is trying to distract voters from the real issues -- so we're going to focus on what they're trying to hide.

They've come out against the life-saving possibilities of stem cell research.

They don't even mention protecting equal pay for equal work.

They support huge tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of Americans.

They've almost completely ignored the $10 billion we're spending every month in Iraq.

And they make zero exceptions for a woman's right to choose -- even in cases of rape, incest, or to protect the life of the mother.

If that all sounds like more of the same, that's because it is. John McCain is offering a third term of the disastrous Bush agenda, so it's no wonder his campaign would choose to focus on attacks instead of issues.

The Republicans are trying to make this campaign about anything but the issues.  They have no choice.

They are saddled with a conflict that they promoted on false pretenses and has killed over 4,000 young Americans and countless Iraqi civilians, a deficit that is truly frightening in its proportions, a social agenda that may be popular with their base but threatens to push us even further into the past, a history of ignoring environmental concerns, a relationship with big oil companies both here and in the Middle East that is keeping us from becoming less dependent on fossil fuels, years of denial that there is climate change, a litany of abuses of power, and an image abroad that is the worst it has been in my memory.

Their trickle down economics is a huge failure that has created corporate greed on a scale that is absolutely frightening.  Jobs are being lost so that executives can continue to draw huge paychecks even in today's tight times.  Their tax plans heavily favor the top 3 or 4% of the income bracket and barely acknowledge people like us.

I don't want another 4 years of Bush, and that's what McCain would give us.  I don't want the government in my body or in my bedroom.  I don't want another 4 years of wondering whether we are going to get involved in even more conflicts because the party in power is so supportive of the military industrial complex.

That's why I'm not getting involved in discussions about Palin's parenting skills, etc.  Yes, it goes to her judgment to some extent, but it is also doing two things I don't like:  (1) focusing even more attention on those kids which is wrong - just because she's using them doesn't mean we have to, and (2) it diverts the attention from the fact that we cannot afford another 4 years of Bush policies, and that's what McCain will give us.

I've had enough of this storm of crap they keep throwing up to obscure the issues.  They keep trying to take our eyes off the ball.  There's nothing really positive they can say about what they've done the past 8 years, so they focus attention on negative spurious attacks and a woman who is honestly a lot more qualified for assistant manager at a local DC bank than as a VP of this country but has an interesting family that seems a lot like the base to which they constantly pander (even though they do nothing for them).

Frankly, what it comes down to for me are the issues and the fact that I want a person who will sit down and seriously consider both sides of a problem, really listen to both sides, and decide what is right for the country.  I want someone who will represent me and not corporate America.  We need someone with good leadership skills and a keen mind.  I'm sick of the "Wow, he's/she's just like me!" method of choosing a leader. I want a leader who is far more intelligent than I am and far more able to hold their own among the leaders of the world without coming off as less than knowledgeable or crass or like they know or care little about the world outside our borders.  How about someone who actually knows something about the world inside our borders?  Wow, that would even be an improvement.

I didn't mean to go on so long, and it being as early as it is, God only knows how many typing mistakes I've made here that spell check won't catch.

  • BRAVA!!!!!!!! I couldn't in a gazillion years have said what you wrote with a fraction of your eloquence! eom Kelly Oh!!
  • You said it so much better than I ever could. Let's get to the issues. But just this morning a man from Time magazine said, now we need to question her, and a spokesperson said, no the news media is off limits. I’ve never heard of such a thing. I guess they’re not going to let he speak on the issues. / Vivian
  • Shea, I soooo totally agree! eom/donna

I saw one ad earlier which only dealt with Palin vs. Obama. I KNOW they are drumming their experience ad nauseum but where are the points McCain should be hitting? Why have we heard so little in ads about what he's gonna do.

For the many still undecided it just may come down to the sarcasm and insults. I watched tonight with an open mind. Like the other night when Thompson slammed rather than convince I thought he lost them votes. Ditto that for Guiliani. He didn't state facts. Each time there was a slam he could lose them votes. Each outright lie.

I did the same with the Democrats. This is my least favorite part of any campaign. Tell me why I should vote for YOU moreso than why I shouldn't vote for your opponent. THAT, in my opinion, gets votes.

Tonight Guiliani and Palin came off snarky when I wanted to see a leader and the person supporting the leader. They deflect and insult the opposition instead of talking the issues.

Yes both sides are guilty of this but tonight was the worst by far.

One of the scariest things to me is some of the more liberal judges are getting waaaay up there in age and will most likely retire within the next 4 years... the next President will be able to tilt the Court so that a woman's right to choose will be only a memory.

  • It won't happen. The right wing needs the abortion issue too much to overturn Roe v. Wade. That's the big threat they use to rally their base every election season. You notice how they banned abortion when they had both the Presidency and a majority in Congress. ~i&b
