Topic: Does anyone know anybody in West Virginia?

Topic Posted by: King of Pain

Additional Comments: I realize that West Virginia is an incredibly poor state that has been screwed over by the coal industry for a century or more. But really. I was watching a bit of The View this morning (by accident) and they were interviewing voters and some white lady said, "I can't vote for Obama because he's a Muslim." And the reporter said, "Actually, he's a Christian." And she said, "Oh that's a lie he put out."

I know uneducated whites support Hillary (according to the polls). My question is, are uneducated voters who believe lies going to screw us over AGAIN?

You watched *The View*.......listened to the content.....and gave it credibility. Your far superior intellect ought to have a real problem with that.

So 90% of blacks vote for Obama and no one is supposed to notice. If anyone says that the majority of black people are voting for Obama, they are branded racists, and told how dare they insinuate that black people are voting for Obama because he's black. So in one state the majority of white people vote for Hillary and they're branded stupid, uneducated racists. Many people have called Hillary a c*nt, and make insulting comments about her looks and pantsuits and everyone has a good old laugh at her expense. If someone dares to mention Rev. Wright  or bring up the fact that Obama's father is a Muslim and as a very young child Obama was raised Muslim, they are dumb and racist. What a bunch of hypocrites the Obama supporters are. The double standard is sickening and I hope women of all colors wake up and see how they are still considered second class citizens.

  • Although Obama is NOT a Muslim, if he were, and that was the reason that was used not to vote for him, it would be racist. There are millions upon millions of Muslims in this world, and obviously, not all of them attacked us on 911 nor wish non Muslims any ill will. Furthermore, I believe it was a Christian President and Administration who lied us into a war on the wrong country, and I certainly don't hold ALL Christians accountable for that. Now, if you would rather vote in someone who holds the same views as this administration because you believe misinformation about the opponent's religion, go right ahead, but try not to be offended when others tell you it is racist. SlapBrooke
  • BTW, I am also a woman, and while I will admit that the orange and red pantsuit combination that she wears is very unattractive, I would not hold that against her when voting. There is a lovely print jacket that she wears sometimes with black pants, and I would not mind wearing the same one myself, but I still like Obama better. SlapBrooke
  • I did not say that I believed Obama is a Muslim. Talk about not understanding. I said that his father is Muslim and as a young child he was raised Muslim. Typical of an Obama supporter who foams at the mouth waiting to throw around the R - word without even listening to what someone with an opposing viewpoint is saying. I was pointing out that double standard where Hillary is concerned . She's been called far worse then Muslim and it's accepted because no one is afraid of being called sexist. Call someone racist and that person's life is over. Get it? It's acceptable to call a woman a c*nt, but to even suggest that Obama may be Muslim causes outrage. As a woman it doesn't bother you that women are still being treated in such a way? As a woman don't you think that being called sexist should be every bit as damaging to a person as being called racist is?
  • First of all, whatever you’re calling yourself today, why do you persist on coming here and trashing anyone who is for Obama? I don’t see anyone trashing those who are for Hillary. They are trashing people on the news for making stupid statements. 50% of those interviewed at the polls said they would not vote for a black man. That’s a stupid statement. You need to understand that just because someone prefers him over Hillary, it does not make them sexist. / Vivian
  • I have not heard anyone call Hillary a c*nt, and it would disturb me. On the other hand, during elections, nasty campaigning has led people to make fun of the candidates clothes, looks, and while juvenile, she is not the first presidential candidate to have to put up with it. Obama was not raised a Muslim as a young child, because his father was an atheist or agnostic by the time he met Barack's mom, and they were divorced by the time he was 2 years old, and was almost entirely missing from his childhood. I hardly want to throw around the *R* word, I know there are alot of reasons that people would vote for Hillary. I supported her husband , and at first was happy she was running, until I saw how she would do and say ANYTHING to win the nomination, which is completely different from what I would expect from someone who wants to change Washington. I don't like how she jumped on the gas tax holiday bandwagon, I don't like how she signed a pledge acknowledging that MI and FL votes were not going to count and then changed her mind all of a sudden when it turned out she needed those votes after all, and she supported NAFTA from the very beginning, but now insists that she opposed it. That is why I won't vote for her. SlapBrooke
  • Vivian, you are the perfect example of what I'm talking about. You see the words Obama, Muslim and black in a sentence and without even reading for content, you start with the accusations. How was I trashing Obama? I was simply making the observation that a female running for president still in our enlightened age does not get the same treatment or respect as a male. That in today's society being called a racist has a greater impact on someone's reputation then being called sexist, which has none. So, I ask you again Vivian, how did I trash Obama?
  • If you will read what I said again, I did not say you were trashing Obama. I said you keep trashing his supporters. Big difference. Are you denying you didn’t trash us??? You keep doing it. Read your rant again. / Vivian
  • I'm pointing out hypocrisy as I see it. Leave it to you, Vivian, to ignore the real issue I was talking about and bury your head in the sand. Instead of so simplemindedly whining and being falsely outraged about how Obama supporters are being treated(boohoo), why don't you open your mind to how this election has treated women? That is unless you approve of women being called c*nts, whores, b!tches and monsters?
  • I have consistently stood against the sexism used against Hillary. She's not a woman. (That's a joke, but she's not a feminist).(KOP)
  • So i guess you all are really going to vote for McCain, huh? ROFLMAO!!

This isn't about WV, but the talk about racism and ignorance made me think of this story I heard on the news earlier this week.  http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/cobb/stories/2008/05/13/mulligans_0514.html

Some asshat bar owner in Marietta, GA is selling t-shirts with a picture of Curious George captioned ''Obama in '08.''  When some of his customers pointed out what a racist a**hole he is, this guy actually had the brass to claim that anyone who has a problem with an Obama t-shirt featuring a monkey is the one guilty of racism.  He claims he just sees a striking resemblance between Curious George and Obama.  This guy's blatant racism is bad enough, but it's even more insulting when he makes such limp excuses for it.  I would almost respect him more if he just admitted that he equates black people to apes.  Almost.

I know there are ignorant people everywhere, but I swear it seems like a disproportionate number of them live in Georgia.  Bob Barr for President, anyone?

This woman is not alone.  To me, it's a blatant attempt to cover up racism by blaming Obama's alleged religion rather than his heritage.  And, yes, she's chronically stupid - was she on another planet during the WEEKS of the Wright nonsense?   Well, I suppose she'd claim he was Muslim, too.

That's OK.  She can vote for McCain in November.  Hope she doesn't find out about his adopted Bangladeshi daughter or all bets are off (just ask Karl Rove how to spin THAT for the ignorant masses).

  • People like that deserve McCain as President. Unfortunitely, the rest of the U.S. would suffer too like we did under Bush. Elaine
  • KellyOh, I can tell you exactly how they will spin the Bangladeshi daughter. They will praise the McCains for rescuing her from a non-Christian country and converting her to Christianity, thus saving her soul. (I've had a lot of experience with these people - sigh!) Miss H

My haircutter in suburban Minneapolis, Minnesota is convinced Obama is a Muslim and that Obama refused to take his oath on the Bible. I can't really convince him otherwise. It is just SO frustrating that the least informed people ("undecideds") have elected the president in the last two elections. Democrats must win so strongly this time that the idiots just can't have that much power. I have been saying every chance I get "Anyone who voted for George W Bush TWICE, should not even be allowed to vote, since they obviously have poor judgment."

I saw that this morning on The View and I had seen a man say the exact same thing on 60 Minutes at another primary.  I can’t remember which one.  Some people just want to believe he’s a monster.  That’s easier than saying they don’t want a black president.  I think there are ignorant people everywhere.

I still get those emails about Obama…actually all kinds of emails about him.  The latest one is a You Tube clip where a crazy black pastor, David Manning, spews hatred about him because he has a white mother.  Most emails even start out by saying it was checked by Snopes.  I always send them back to everyone on the list and explain to them why it’s a lie and if they had bothered to READ what Snopes said they would know it’s a lie.  Even when it’s proven to them that it’s not true they don’t believe you.  I tell them not to send me anymore hate mail but they still do it.  They say they’re just trying to educate me.

  • Sounds like a change of email address might be in order even though it's a pain. ~i&b
  • I know. I guess I’m going to have to, even though I hate to. I used to have a feature on my Norton Security that would block people, but when they told me to download a latest version it was gone. I have to call them about it. / Vivian

My ex-boyfriend grew up in Morgantown, West Virginia. He was from a coal miner's family. He was Welsh-Irish like me so we had that in common. He received his education from West Virginia University.

All that I can say is that my man was a smart guy or else I would not have dated him. His father had a position in state government regarding the coal mines and he was a friend of Senator Robert Byrd.

    I hate southern stereotypes. GRRR.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Yeah, what drives ME crazy is when that hurtful stereotype gets reinforced. Let's go WV! (KOP)
  • Stereotyping works two ways. Like Obama talking about the typical white person who crosses the street if they see a group of black people walking towards them. Or Obama claiming that the poor are bitter and cling to their guns. Or that anyone who votes for Hillary instead of Obama is a closet racist. Or that the only people voting for Hillary are old, white and uneducated. Of course Obama supporters are above all that because they're the only ones who are open minded, evolved and educated. Oh, and the ones who are doing all the stereotyping and fingerpointing because not everyone is as easily manipulated into Obama submission as they are.
  • He has never said that anyone who votes for Hillary is a closet racist, and no one has ever said that the ONLY people voting for Hillary are old white and uneducated. You still haven’t learned to calm down and stop imagining things. / Vivian
  • OBAMA......OBAMA.......MUST VOTE OBAMA.......MUST VOTE OBAMA........ Yes. now that I think about it, that is how I was forced into submission to vote for Obama. I read that statement over and over and submitted to his will. SlapBrooke
  • Vivian, you have to learn to read more than this board and listening to specially chosen sound clips since you are so unaware of what is being said.SlapBrooke, you got that right, that's exactly how people are brainwashed!! Yes,we can. Yes,we can. Yes we can. Change, change, change.
  • No, it is not brainwashing, it is called free thinking and choice. Clinton says she is for change but her actions and words show otherwise. SlapBrooke
  • Bz, that’s a laugh. There is no use talking to someone who gets so worked up all the time that she can’t even rationalize. / Vivian
  • Unlike you Vivian? I've never seen someone go so postal and start personal attacks on someone because they don't like Obama. Talk about irrational behaviour.
  • Behaviour? Can you actually vote in this country or are you just pretentious?

I know quite a few people from WV-and they (and their families) are educated. I grew up in South Fla with New Yorkers and now live in NC-there is ignorance everywhere-I don't know that WV will be that different, but I missed that news coverage. I do know that I'm tired of the southern stereotypes.

  • I'm from GEORGIA, so I'm tired of them too! But WV is POOR and it's not the poor people's fault. So I'm glad to hear you know some educated people there. (KOP)
  • Wow, and I'm an educated person from West Virginia too. Stereotype much? Every state has poor, ignorant people! I'm sure they could've found a person in every state who thinks exactly the same thing about Obama as that ignorant woman from West Virginia! eom
  • This morning on the news they were saying that 2/3 of West Virginians are uneducated whites and that percentage is larger than in any other state. From the polls they found that half would not vote for a black and 50% think Obama agrees with Rev. Wright. That 50% only seem to get their knowledge, whether it’s true or false, from little sound bites. / Vivian
  • Who on this board has actually been to West Virginia? If you have not, how do you perceive the people in this state (yes, WV is my state) living?
  • Shooey, I actually don’t perceive the people from the state being one way or another. These were just the numbers they were putting out there. I never really thought about it before. I think we all know there are plenty of smart people in your state, as in any state. My state, Florida, is always being made fun of as if we’re all seniors with dementia. Even if we are, there are still plenty of young people here with plenty of brains. Our scholastic tests are usually low because of so many non-English speaking children here. But they never explain that to people outside the state. By the way, I have been to WV before, but it was a long time ago. / Vivian
