Topic: Is anybody else afraid if this monster of a storm hits N.O. it will wipe it off

Additional Comments:

the map?  It’s already a cat 4.  I’m really praying that it will turn just enough to miss N.O.  My doctor and I were talking about it yesterday and he said he does not believe N.O. can come back if they get hit.  He even thinks the levy will breach.

I don’t want any city to get hit, but a different city might be able to survive it better than N.O. if it gets it once more so soon.   A lot of the people said they could not come back and rebuild another time. Some of the homes are still in the process of being rebuilt.  We know it’s going to hit some place and I don’t want to have to watch it again either.

This is, indeed, very scary.  So many people have renovated their homes and gotten back to normal and now this monster is coming.  Thankfully, this time the people are getting out.  Behind Gustav is Hanna and others are in the wake so it's very nerve-wracking.

  • It is nerve wracking. I’m getting too old for all the stress every time there’s one out there. I can’t even fathom what the New Orleanians are going through. / Vivian
  • Hannah is currently a tropical storm and not expected to become a hurricane so at least we don't have to worry about a 1-2 punch of back-to-back hurricanes. That's something to be thankful for at least. ~i&b
  • Don't forget the two *systems* behind Hannah. Tropical storms can be a giant PITA because they still have those sustained winds that cause power outages, tornadoes and flooding, but people tend to shrug them off because they aren't as bad as hurricanes. Look at all the damage our last tropical storm did. It's exhausting being a Floridian at this time of year - weatherwise, that is. Actually, I'd expand that to being anyone living on the Gulf of Mexico. // Shea

Evacuations are happening (or have happened) and I hope and pray that FEMA will react IMMEDIATELY this time, and do whatever is necessary to help everyone affected by this vicious storm.

This storm looks very very bad.

I think a few of the same problems that existed last time are still around.  There are going to be lots of people who don't get the message or have no way of leaving.  Ironically, what may help this time around is the fact that the poor have not been encouraged to return because there's no housing, few jobs, slow re-opening of schools, little healthcare available, etc.  So it won't be "as bad" as last time.  I hate to even say it that way because what I really want is for this monster to disappear.

Our wether is just crummy.  Gray, windy, drizzly.  We had some heavy rain yesterday that we're told was an outer band as it went over Cuba, but I don't think we will be directly effected.

  • We’re still getting some outer bands of it but nothing bad. Last week, when I first heard it would enter the Gulf, I thought it could come back around to you. Thank God it isn’t but we know, once it enters the Gulf, it’s going to hit land somewhere and I always feel bad for anyone living near the Gulf. / Vivian

I hope and pray that this storm weakens.  It's frightening to think that N.O. is going to be hit again.  So many people are still suffering from Katrina.

  • I know. It’s really horrible to think about. At least thank God, we shouldn’t have to see what we saw before./ Vivian

Here near Houston the tension is high.  News is showing the freeways pretty full coming out of Louisiana and weather updates constantly.  My daughter's inlaws are leaving to come here from Orange, TX which is right on the border of TX and LA.  Everything is pointing to Gustav heading right at NO and now the hospitals there are evacuating this morning.

    How's everything your way b@s?

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • NO Mayor Nagin is begging people to leave and states that looting will not be tolerated in any form. Those caught will go directly to prison. Buses and flights will have to stop leaving by Monday morning because winds will be too dangerous. Nursing homes are also being evacuated now. Eve
  • Nothing much going on here. We're prepared to leave if we need to but so far it doesn't look like we need to. all I have to do is grab my laptop and my kids and go.../Gma b@s
  • This morning I heard that at least one children’s hospital was going to keep it’s patients there, and if it flooded they would fly them out by helicopters landing on the roof, but I thought I just heard the governor strongly urge every single hospital to remove their patients. I can’t even imagine how a city that size can evacuate every single patient in every single hospital, but they have to. / Vivian
  • It does look like people are more prepared. A clip was shown live from the French Quarter and it is deserted. The officials are taking a no-nonsense attitude and say people are on their own if they stay. Eve

Friday morning I woke up with a twitch... and a rumble in my belly. It was this nervous feeling that it wouldn't go away.

That's when I realized what day it was...total deja vu.

And now its happening again. I'm nervous for my city, my friends and everyone else. It can only handle so much. They're a tough krewe... but even the greatest krewes can only handle so much.

  • I keep telling myself it doesn’t always hit the original forecasted target. Do you still have friends living in N.O. and if you do have they all left? / Vivian
  • Oh yeah. Everyone has left NO. A lot are going to Baton Rouge, a few to Shreveport and then everyone else is scattering (oddly, quite a few to Atlanta!). eom. JR.

It doesn't sound good for New Orleans.  At least they are getting people out before it hits, but what will be left for them to come back to?  And they don't sound too sure of the levees holding.

I wouldn't want any city to have to bear the brunt of this big storm, but it just doesn't seem fair for the same city to get hit again so soon.  They are just beginning to recover.

Let's pray that some miracle will help them.

    Yes, it is very scary.

Does anyone know if our poster Jason Robert is still in the NOLA area?  He posted riveting reports from his university during the Katrina aftermath.  He may have relocated though.

Hope all of our members in the path, including TX and FL are all safe and sound.

  • He moved to I think Atlanta a year or two ago. I think he’s still there. He posted something earlier today. It’s skirting right by us, Florida. Hope it doesn’t change paths at the last minute. Well, that doesn’t sound right. Of course, I don’t want anyone to get it. / Vivian
  • My sister and brother-in-law live in Ft Myers Beach, also my niece in Estero, so I keep close watch on all hurricanes. This one looks pretty bad./Peace
  • Thanks for thinking of me. I left Louisiana about a year ago. Job opportunities were just too good to pass up (but suddenly, I want to move back and become a bartender). eom. JR
