Dick Cheney, Alberto Gonzales indicted in S. Texas
Charges related to alleged abuse of prisoners in federal detention centers
Associated Press

McALLEN, Texas — A South Texas grand jury has indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on charges related to the alleged abuse of prisoners in Willacy County's federal detention centers.

The indictment criticizes Cheney's investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and "at least misdemeanor assaults" on detainees by working through the prison companies.

Gonzales is accused of using his position while in office to stop an investigation into abuses at the federal detention centers.

Another indictment charges state Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. with profiting from his public office by accepting honoraria from prison management companies.

The indictments were first reported by KRGV-TV.

Check out the TV coverage. Watch the whole thing. I've always disliked the motto, "Don't Mess With Texas", but now I'm really excited by it.

  • Do you have any idea what the charges will be? I wonder why they wouldn’t wait till they’re out of power, because I would think the White House Mafia could just have the District Attorney wiped out. I'll believe all this when I actually see it happen. / Vivian
  • Thanks for posting this. Will these men see a jail cell? This is the first time I am hearing about this. I wonder why this is not all over the news?.. ./Angela

Can't Bush pardon them or do they have to be found guilty before he can?  I think they do.  I want to see Rove punished for all his crimes, but I know it'll never happen.

  • I guess not. I'm sitting here listening to the news about Obama's AT nomination, a Justice Department official from the Clinton administration. Apparently, he pardoned a FOB (Friend of Bill) before the guy was tried...eom...Mitch
  • Mitch, this indictment is a State case, not Federal. Plus, the way the court system moves, W will be back in Crawford (hopefully facing his own indictments) before Cheney is found guilty. I don't think, State or Federal, you can pardon an indictment. That would assume guilt, before you have your day in court. And oh, let those days start coming. Midge
  • Mitch it was was proven that Holder had nothing to do with Rich's pardon, I heard on a news program last night that Holder wasn't in on it./PJ
  • I dunno..........CNN is still reporting the Holder-Rich-Clinton thing this morning....I'll keep watching...eom...Mitch
  • Got it, Midge. I thought because it was a federal prison, a federal court would have jurisdiction...eom...Mitch
  • Considering that the guy was a lawyer doing his job which was entirely legal what exactly is the issue? Lawyers are not responsible for the actions of their clients nor do most of them invest themselves in their clients...topcat
  • Not even in the same league, Mitch...//ec
  • Which guy was a lawyer doing his job? Midge
