Amie popped over to the DOOL board to respond to this topic, which got me to thinking I'd get a lot of good responses over here!  Don't let me down, AMCers.  :)

So.....

I'm listening to Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry."   It is the song I curse because the telephone noise in it sounds like my cell phone.  But I digress.

I just learned that it was written after Natalie Wood's death and is about the tabloids and the stories they ran about the tragic drowning.

I also know that Eric Clapton wrote "Tears in Heaven" about the 4-year-old son he lost when the boy fell out a window to his death.  Clapton has said he will never perform or record the song again.

Do you know any music trivia like this?  SHARE!

With Or Without You by U2 was written as an obsession/stalker song and Bono said it amazed him how often it was played at weddings as a love song.  He said it is more of a breakup song.

Roy Orbison wrote Pretty Woman for his wife after watching her walking towards him on the street.

  • LOL at ''With or Without You'' being played at weddings. Sure, he's saying he can't live without you, but he's also saying he can't live WITH you! Not romantic. Pretty song, though. The other song I heard playing at a wedding was Green Day's ''Good Riddance.'' Nice ballad and all, but it's clearly a breakup song. --susie

'With Arms Wide Open' - Scott Stapp - Creed - about finding out that he was going to have a baby.

'You look wonderful tonight'  - Eric Clapton to his friends wife.  Can't remember who.  Patty someone.

  • Eric Clapton also wrote ‘’Tears in Heaven,’’ about his son who fell to his death, and he wrote ‘’My Father’s Eyes,’’ about his father whom he had never known, and whom he had only seen in his son’s eyes. They’re both haunting songs. / Vivian
  • Oops, I forgot that susienews had already mentioned ‘’Tears in Heaven.’’ / Vivian
  • I know that ''Layla'' was about Patti Boyd, who was George Harrison's wife. Clapton stole her from him. ITA about those songs you mentioned being haunting. Hauntingly beautiful. --susie

Carly Simon wrote ‘’You’re So Vain,’’ about an ex lover.  She said it was a composite of three men…one of them, Warren Beatty.

  • In recent years she's given hints (by naming letters in the name). Other candidates are Mick Jagger (who sings back-up vocals on the hit). Kris Kristofferson and her ex-hubby James Taylor. She's also joking named Mark Felt (lol).eom/WE
  • That’s funny. At first I couldn’t remember who Mark Felt was, but now I remember…Deep Throat. / Vivian
  • Not too long ago there was an auction for charity. The winning bidder would meet Carly Simon and she would tell him/her who that song was about. But whoever won had to sign something vowing he/she'd never tell. --susie

Anticipation was written about how Carly Simon felt while waiting for her hot date with Cat Stevens.  That has always cracked me up, I guess because Cat Stevens is not the first person I think of when I think hot date.

Hey, baby, wanna see my ''moonshadow?''

  • When I was a senior in HS, I had it bad for Cat Stevens and felt every song was written for me. LOL. izi

The meaning behind Joni Mitchell's Big Yellow Taxi is pretty evident, but did you know that it was inspired by her first visit to Waikiki, Hawaii?  She gazed at the wondrous green mountains from her hotel balcony, but when she looked down she saw nothing but a sea of parking lots.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Having just been to Waikiki, that story makes a lot of sense. Everything is amazing from the top of Diamond Head, but you'll ruin it if you look down. I love that song, BTW. Joni's version, not the Counting Crows' cover. --susie

I know quite a few song trivias since I really love music. One of the stories that was always interesting to me was the song "How Long" by Ace (from 1975). Many people thought the song was a love song, the lead singer requesting, "How long has this been going on" thinking he's talking to his cheating girl friend. The song is actually written by Paul Carrack (later in the group Mike and the Mechanics) and it's a semi-bitter song to his former bass player Terry Comer, who left the band Ace to join another band. Paul felt betrayed. Ironically, Terry returned to Ace to play bass on the song "How Long".

  • I know a lot of musicians and a ''cheating'' bandmate is almost worse than a cheating girlfriend. : ) --susie

Mia Farrow traveled (well known) to India with The Beatles. Her sister Prudence went along and could NOT believe what the press was doing. They hid everywhere - in trees, hallways...everywhere. She couldn't take it anymore and just stayed in her room and John Lennon penned Dear Prudence, won't you come out to play...!!

Same trip it was reported the Maharishi attempted to rape Mia. John Lennon was pissed, ended the relationship then wrote a song with the Maharishi's name in it. Fearing he'd be sued he changed it to Sexy Sadie:

Sexy Sadie what have you done
You made a fool of everyone
You made a fool of everyone
Sexy Sadie oooh what have you done.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Wow. I knew they wrote off the Maharishi for some reason, but that was not what I imagined. Whenever I hear ''Sexy Sadie'' the Manson implications come in. Susan Atkins was nicknamed 'Sadie.' Of course, Manson thought Helter Skelter was a race war, when it was really just about a slide. --susie
  • I know that Across the Universe mentions one of the guru's they were with in the refrain ''Jai guru deva'', but I had never heard this story. Perhaps when he sings ''nothings gonna change my world'' it doesn't mean what I thought it always had. Interesting. ///Isis
