I've seen 5 Paul Newman movies. Nobody's Fool, The Verdict, The Sting, Without Malice and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

That's it! (And, frankly, The Sting didn't count because I was too young to get it when it first came out.)

What a great man. What a NORMAL man.

I remember something he said in an interview many years ago. The interviewer was gushing on about having it all - the money, respect of his peers and the adoration of the public. Newman interrupted, and said he would trade it all and live on the street if it would bring his son back.

A true legend. RIP.

  • That just brings tears to the eyes. I heard him interviewed a few years ago and he was asked about losing Scott who was only 29 y/o. He said that you have to move on, of course, but for him things had never gotten better. The look on his face said it all. I believe that he would have traded it all. /sb
  • I think Mr. Newman and his son are together now....RH

This news just took my breath away. He was my pin-up poster guy from college days. I adored Paul Newman. He was a gorgeous man on the outside, but more importantly, on the inside.

He believed that if you were one of the lucky ones, then you should give to those who were not so lucky in life. He put words into action, and I believe the death of his son was a pivotal turning point not only in his personal life but in his acting.

A consummate gentleman, a philanthropist, a father, a husband, and a wonderful actor. The world is a better place because he 'lived'. We have lost a treasure. May his legacy live on.

Thoughts go out to his wife and family. What an unimaginable loss for them. Rest in peace.

  • Songbird, you said that beautifully. I can only imagine what Joanne Woodward is going through these days. Poor thing. RH

He was a fantastic actor, philanthropist and a downright special man.

My mother was such a fan of his when I was growing up (his looks just made her melt, especially THOSE EYES) and I never got it until I was an adult.  Then I finally saw what she saw, as well as what an incredible actor he was.

I love that he raced cars, gave so much money to charity, and really showed everyone that someone as fortunate as he was was really a down-to-earth, generous, live-and-let-live kind of guy.  May he rest in peace.

  • Hey KellyOh!, my mom was also a big fan--she loved his acting and his big blue eyes. I don't think our parent's generation knew how much more there was to Mr. Newman...his philanthropic side, I mean. What a great guy. RH

I was floored although I shouldn't be since the tabloids were all over his illness.

He has always been in my TOP FIVE! I adore him as an actor, a man and a humanitarian.

Recently there was a list of the most generous celebrities. Paul was halfway down the top 10 list. HUH??? It listed the ten million dollars he gives ANNUALLY to his alma mater BUT did NOT list the 100% profits he gives from Newman's Own to his Hole In The Wall Gang.

Considering that charity has been around for a few decades - shame on them!!

I'm busy and about to leave on vacation but I have quite a few wonderful stories about this LEGEND that I will share some time in the future.

Condolences to Joanne, his wife of 50 years, and his children!

    RIP Mr. Newman!!

  • Wy, I think I heard the amount was $25 million that was donated from the Newman food sales to his foundation. Man, he could have kept all the money for himself--but he gave it away. BTW, a friend of mine works in fundraising in Kenyon College, Mr. Newman's alma mater, and they absolutely loved him there. It wasn't simply because he was a big donor--they just loved him. I'm sure he left a huge amount to the college in his will, but I'm also sure that the college would rather have him. RH
  • Oh I agree - they would much rather have him - as would we. eom/WE
  • Thought you might like to see what Kenyon College has on its website: www.kenyon.edu

  • Sally Field said something like *God made the perfect man* in Paul Newman. I thought that was so sweet. RH

When I was a teenager, I had the biggest crush on him. That face, those eyes. Did anyone ever see the movie "Hud?" Now that was man.

  • Yes, he was a very handsome man--and he and Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid AND The Sting....what a duo! RH
