Additional Comments:

This summer it seems like there is a new breed of mosquitoes and they are feasting on my blood.  I can be out for just a few minutes and start feeling itchy and see the welts forming.  I don't even see the nasty buggers on me.  I think they are invisible.  We haven't been able to enjoy our backyard or eat on the deck.   It doesn't even matter what time of the day.

My legs look terrible.  Pink spots and welts.  I use Benadryl cream to help the itch.  I've never experienced this before and never so bad.  Just this morning, driving Martin to the station, on the way back my leg started to itch.  Here I am driving and trying hard not to scratch.   The minute I got in the door I ran for the cream.

I spoke to my brother about this last night.  He knows a lot about the environment and he said there is a new breed that came somewhere from China.  I don't know if I can take this as fact because he is a Republican and he has issues.  LOL.

Anyone else experience the same?

Hi izi,

Mosquitoes are evil, I tell ya.  They're pure evil.

I don't kill bugs. I bring them outside. They have a right to live and my ability to kill them shouldn't change that.   Mosquitoes are the exception.  Mosquitoes want my blood.  Plus, they carry diseases like the West Nile Virus.  It's self-defense - kill or be killed.

Thanks to the 11:00 news, I have learned that sitting water attracts mosquitoes.  It might just be some rain water that has collected somewhere.

I've also read the eating garlic repels them.

  • gg, sitting water is where they breed and they don't need a lot of water. I think my neighbor's kiddie pool is part of my problem. One day he was cleaning the pool and said it was slimy and looked like algae was on the bottom of the pool. He also keeps a bucket under his window where is A/C unit is. These are just minor issues I have with this family and from what I just shared. I think you get that I wouldn't discuss any of this with them. So if you have planters outside that have a water tray get rid of the tray. Make sure there isn't anything around that collects water. The buggers breed fast. Like you I usually try to put bugs outside when they get into the house but two that I will swat are mosquitoes and flies. Oh about the garlic, I use garlic in almost all of my meals and eat it raw when I add it to tomato salads. I've never had any luck with garlic helping. I suspect that has something to do with the vampire myth. izi

I have had some of the same experiences you just described!  We've been joking that the 'city bugs' are not as bad as the 'country bugs' since we've moved from the city to the farm!  LOL  I've been bitten while watering or gardening but not quite as bad as you.  Mine only welt up and itch for a short time.  I have sensitive skin anyway (although I've not had any problems for the past couple of years until we moved!) and I have a prescription cream I use on my bites.  Ashley has the same problem.  Neither hubby nor Ally have had any problem with the bites.  I tell them it's because they are not sweet enough!  LOL

I have 2 citronella plants on my patio near my table and those seem to help keep them off of the patio.  I also will light a citronella candle when we are out.  As far as keeping them off of me in the garden or yard, I just spray with Avon bug spray (I can't recall the exact name)....it isn't too sticky and it doesn't smell like 'bug spray'......

Have a fantabulous and not-so-buggy weekend!  LOL

  • Hi A&A, I keep meaning to ask you, when did you move back to the country? Did you live in NY? Was the move hard for the girls? I have citronella candles, not the plants and I don't think they really work. Maybe I'll try lighting them an hour before I plan on being out. izi

izi..Vic has had such problems with this. She has about 6 or 7 of them & 2 are really itchy. I have itch spray but that only helps for a little while. We have a party to go to tomorrow and I will make sure my kids have bug spray on them..

  • Angela, sorry to hear that Vic is suffering too. I don't use bug spray but my brother tells me I should. I hate putting it on but I might have to start. izi
