Subject: Actually, that isn't quite true. We've seen actresses gain weight & not had that jeopardize their jobs on soaps, particularly when there was a medical reason for it. We've also seen men gain far more weight without their jobs being jeopardized. That isn't to say that shows haven't tried embarrassing the performers into losing the weight. Dressing them badly, putting their characters in less flattering situations, shooting them badly are all commonly done. It doesn't work, especially if the performer has a medical reason for the weight gain. Some have gone so far as to have gastric bypass, but I don't see that GH (for example) is offering Genie Francis a contract since she lost the 40 lbs or so since her last stint on the show. They still have her dressed in some dowdy robe & slippers, w/nothing flattering being done w/her hair. No improvement in the material she got this time around either. Age is much more of the enemy than weight. eom
