All My Children Discussion Group
but I wasn't checking out the AMC discussion page (or the OLTL one for that matter) for such a long time now, I really wonder what you guys came up with as an answer to the question ''why did they kill off Stuart Chandler?'' I was really stunned that they would kill Stuart of all people. It's like it got your attention for awhile and was very shocking, but in the long run, I think it was such a big mistake. Was there some reason given for his demise other than they couldn't think of anything exciting that week (or for about a thousand weeks) to write about? That was such a special AMC thing--Stuart and Adam--one person playing two people flawlessly. Now that's gone and I would be very surprised if they weren't already wishing they had not done that. This has been the longest, most boring stretch of AMC I can ever remember, except for anytime a trial takes place. Maybe some people like them, but when I hear there is going to be a trial, I head for the hills and don't watch until I am SURE it is over with. They are always way too long and so uneventful. Ugh to AMC trials.
One other question: why can't Amanda go to Family Court or whatever it would be called in TV-land (not really a trial lol) and explain to a normal judge whom David or Evil Gayle doesn't know and bribe, and get shared, legal custody? The baby isn't David's alone and this living arrangement that she HAS TO do (be without her husband or else) is the stupidest thing I think I have ever heard of. Don't any of these people watch Judge Judy? (''take your hands out of your pockets!!'') Seriously, why is David allowed to determine the child's living arrangments without benefit of the court supervising things and having them both pay child support? And now he wants a ''new baby'' and Amanda can live with Jake and have partial custody of her own baby because David says so? How dumb are these writer's? Do they get paid at all? Maybe that's why the writing is so crappy. I guess if I got a nickel a show, I wouldn't try too hard either :) What a disappointment AMC is becoming. I used to watch it and be glued to the tube, now I put it on as background noise at night just so I can get some space so I can program something else for the next day. I guess I could just delete it, but the only day I actually watch it is Friday, as if anything is going to happen, it usually happens then...maybe.
Could you update me on what you all decided the reason for Stuart's demise was? I don't think they thought ahead at all, as it was such a successful acting job on the part of David Canary--you just don't find that everywhere. I will miss his one collar sticking out of his sweater. How could they kill the conscience of Pine Valley and think that people would be okay with that? I'm not, I can't be alone in my thinking, can I? Thanks.

The reason David has Amanda and Jake by the short and curlies is because he could take them to court for child endangerment for taking part in Opal's cockeyed plan to let Trevor be "found" by Opal in an alley on the church steps. But Randi found him instead and kept him for so long.
Leaving a newborn in an alley is not exactly something even Judge Judy would look kindly upon.
As for Adam/Stuart leaving, I have to say that I think David Canary has watched the show lately and seen that he indeed is starting to look too old to play the virile stud that is marrying Annie. It happens to all of us--I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror and wonder who that old woman is.
Just once in a while, there's a view of Adam where he looks his age, which I think is in his 70s in real life. Didn't I read that in real life he was off the show for awhile to have a hip replacement, when we all were so worried he was seriously ill? I had both knees replaced in the past two years--age catches up with all of us.
In real life, if a 70-year-old were marrying a woman in her 20s, people would be going "Yuck" even more than we are here over Ryan and Erica, only a 30-year difference in real ages or so. Who liked Anna Nicole Smith with her aged husband?
If Adam and Erica had continued with the renewal of the romance that very briefly seemed to be happening, that would have been far more acceptable, and Adam could have carried that off for years more, if he so chose.
If Adam's character were allowed to be a Joe Martin sort, semi-retired and occasionally wise and kindly, that would be one thing. But whether it is David Canary or TIIC, that kind of gentle transition never happened for Adam.
I got the feeling that Adam/Stuart were going to phase out somehow anyway, with or without the move to LA. I bet it's more David Canary's style to go out when he's ahead.
Those are my thoughts. Agree or disagree?

I figured eliminating Stuart had something to do with cost cutting and a stupid move in my opinion. There are so many mediocre actors on AMC who could be written out and wouldn't even be missed.
As for Amanda, how stupid is she? My first question was the same as yours - why not get a good lawyer and tell a judge how David is using the baby for his manipulations? And that's just one point about this whole ridiculous storyline! This has got to be one of the dumbest stories ever.
I always thought it was a matter of money. The last few years so many of the top soap stars took pay cuts and David Canary got double pay for playing the dual roles.
I can't think of another reason.
Although I've commented during her pregnancy on the Amanda v. David custody situation and the role of the courts, I didn't question why Stuart was killed off. I was just very glad it was not Adam since Stuart would not have been a protagonist on AMC so if Adam went, so would Stuart and thus so would David Canary be gone.
I was very VERY relieved to hear David Canary is making the move to LA and hoped either it would turn out he did NOT kill Stuart...or if he did, he managed to survive and we'd be treated to Adam in agony for quite some time until he was somehow about to go on with this life.
But then my bubble was burst on the board last week when someone posted that David Canary is only going to LA to wrap up his contract. Assuming this killing of Stuart is now the ending of Adam...I detest the storyline and I hate that this is the ending for such a fabulous character and it's a HUGE HUGE loss if David Canary is done.
So I don't know...maybe they were killing Adam off last spring then his contract settled or his health issue resolved so they kept him on...killing Stuart instead...then with the move to LA they decided to end things.
I have no idea. I think it sucks.
As for Amanda v. David...meh. I love David and Jake..I care less about Amanda. She's okay.
I'm sure others will have a lot more to say on your topic. I'm just kind of worn out from all of this..the move to LA...the loss of so many cast members...Opal, Aiden, Petey, and others...and of course Zach...Thorsten Kaye has been given so much garbage to spew in the last few weeks I'm sure he's chomping at the bit to get out. His role has become silly at this point. Then there's Erica with Ryan...
It's all a mess at this point.
:(
