Okay, let me break it down.

A number of sites are reporting that the coming issue of Soap Opera Weekly has news of Beth Ehlers (Harley, Guiding Light) signing on with All My Children to play Liza Colby.

Carolyn Hinsey, editor of Soap Opera Weekly, just posted on her blog that something about a certain AMC story that will appear in this issue may turn out to be incorrect.

My take: It's remotely possible that the entire deal somehow fell through... but only remotely. It's a greater possibility that TPTB had second thoughts about Liza being the role Ehlers will play. There was already sentiment that she is far too young for the role (especially considering AMC's character-age timeline is strained as it is), and might be better suited for a different recast role. Among those characters we've seen mentioned here and in the soap mags are Adam's daughter, Hayley Santos (Kelly Ripa's former role), and Dixie's younger sister, Melanie Courtlandt (aka Lanie, who is living in Europe and was last played by Paige Turco in the early-90's).

What's everyone's take here? If the story is true, and Ehlers is indeed coming to AMC, who do you think she should she play?

If the show is considering more emphasis on the Courtlandt family, I think that the character of Kelsey should return. Her son is the great-grandson of Palmer and Daisy and the grandson (sort of) of Nina, and the grandson of Dr. Cliff Warner.
I don't know anything about Beth Ehlers, so I don't know if she is right for this role, but I think that Kelsey should be considered.

  • Interesting that you mention that, considering that Ehlers' character on Guiding Light, Harley, shares a daughter with Dylan, played by Brian Gaskill - who is AMC's ex-Bobby Warner, who fathered with Kelsey the son adopted by Maria. I don't think they're going to recast Kelsey, but I thought the six-degrees thing was worth mentioning! ~Soaker :-)

I think Beth Ehlers could be a good Liza. I'd like krista Tesreau to play Hayley.

  • You're clearly a diehard KT fan, and I don't mean to take anything away from that... But Tesreau is leaps and bounds too old to play Hayley. She would suddenly be older than Skye, and that would really throw things off. Sorry, that's just not going to happen. ~Soaker

Just wondering...if GL has sunk like a stone, why on earth would AMC, not doin' so great itself, want to take on all GL's baggage.  What AMC needs is OLD(younger)Colby back!  She was a bright and shining star!  Nu(older)Colby, NuJake and PossibleNuLiza, not so much.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • GL's sinking arguably has far less to do with its actors (especially those of Goldin or Ehlers' caliber) than it does its overall writing / production. Say what we will about AMC, it's still probably a creative ''happy dance'' compared to GL's current state. ~Soaker

Just to follow up on something I mentioned below:

AMC may be looking to strengthen the Cortlandt family, after all. Reportedly, a casting call has gone out for Peter (aka ''Petey'') Cortlandt, Palmer & Opal's now SORAS'd son. And his character may turn out to be the ultimate romantic direction for Colby... Longtime viewers will especially see the potential conflict of a Chandler / Cortlandt pairing.

If this come to be true, I have to say, I like the way the writers are systematically altering the character landscape. I've almost entirely forgotten the totally unfamiliar ''Twilight Zone'' Pine Valley of a year or two ago.

NOT as Liza, please no. Anybody else, fine. Hayley makes more sense.

And Liza was never "friends" with Angie & Jesse. LMAO. Quite the opposite.

  • Liza won't be the role, though the cover of Soap Opera Weekly will prematurely say it is... We don't know who it will be right now, but Ehlers is definitely joining AMC. ~Soaker

Beth Ehlers is right at 40 and probably could be Colby's mother, however, there are other factors to consider.  Liza was friends with Angie, Jessie and Tab, who are all around 50.  Someone around their age as Liza would be better suited for the character.

  • Actiually, no. Back in 1982 Liza, Jenny, Greg, Jesse and Angie were all classmates in high school together, and they couldn't have been more than 16 or 17, at most. If you do the math, that would make them all in their early 40's today. Tad is several years older than the rest, so I'd estimate him to be mid to late 40's...But then, this is Pine Valley time, so who knows, lol? Pine Valley time has little or no relation to reality. Colby was born in 1999, so by rights she ought to be starting fourth grade (not college) in the fall! Understatement
  • Thanks for clearing that up for me. Those years are a bit sketchy for me. I was going by their RL ages. The ironic thing is, in RL, Tad is several years younger than Angie and Jesse. Gotta love Pine Valley....Heidi

She should play a new character. Enough recasts and I don't want her to play Liza or Hayley. Marcy Walker and Kelly Ripa made those characters very distinctive and Beth Ehlers, no matter how good an actress could never recapture that. She is too young for Liza and too old for Hayley.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Well, the opinions on age are pretty subjective: Ehlers is two years older than Kelly Ripa. OLTL's Tina, Andrea Evans, is four years older than her very successful one-time replacement, Karen Witter. Does than means Evans is now ''too old'' to play Tina? Or was Witter too young for the role? Of course, I don't think either is the case. I'm just offering some food for thought on the age thing... For Ehlers to play Hayley, two years of difference in age would hardly be a factor. ~Soaker
  • I think she comes across as more than 2 years older than Ripa no matter what her actual age. Can you picture her married to Mateo because I can't and I don't want her bringing an annoying son who is sure to be a teenager now to town. Evans and Ritter both had that sex kitten thing going on and seemed the same level of maturity.
  • I'd pick Ehlers playing Hayley way over Liza, but I think the idea of being Melanie (Dixie's sister) is most appealing. I'm just not sure TPTB wish to build upon the Courtlandt family as much as they do the Chandlers. Either scenario has great possibilities attached. We'll see what happens... ~Soaker

While I've always liked Beth Ehlers, I just can't see her as Liza Colby. She's way too young. Liza should be in her late 40s/very early 50s. She would look ridiculous as NuColby's mother. I do think BE would make a very interesting Hayley recast and I hope that's the direction that tiic are heading in. The show should recast Liza (there's plenty of story there -- she could certainly liven up the Tad/Krystal/Adam triangle) but I don't think BE should fill the role.

  • I always thought Ally Walker (of Profiler fame), who was held as a recast for Marcy Walker's Eden on Santa Barbara (but instead had the role of Andrea created for her when Walker re-signed) would make a great Liza. But that won't happen... So I would choose another Beth from Guiding Light: Beth Chamberlin (who plays Beth Spaulding). She's without a contract at GL, and would honestly make an EXCELLENT Liza. ~Soaker

Considering the age range of nuColby, BE as Liza would look as ridiculous as Dixie being JR's mother, IMO. If Jake's wife is supposed to show up that role would make sense for her. Didn't they play the smokin' hot couple of the century on GL?

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Yeah, but I have my gut instinct on Jake's wife... and let's just say I don't believe they'll be casting her role anytime soon (if ever). ~Soaker

They do this all the time without a thought to past history of the character. If memory serves didn't Jake think he was Colby's father until it was revealed that Adam bought the fertility clinic? Now that they have SORASed Colby and (sort of) deSORASed Jake - it's near impossible. I think new Colby is early twenties and RPG is 40. Jake wasn't a teen when that happened and RPG doesn't look his age.

Ehlers is older IRL than Cady McClain and if McClain is considered old enough to play JR's mother (and JR is Colby's older brother), then of course Ehlers is old enough to play Colby's mother. But I think it would be a big mistake to hire Ehlers to play Liza Colby. They have the original Tad and Jesse and even Greg. They need the original Liza. Let Ehlers play somebody else. Why can't it be a new character?

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • I'm guessing here. TPTB want Liza back but Marcy Walker isn't interested so they must cast anew.eom/WE
  • Regarding whether or not Ehlers is age-appropriate as a Liza recast, I was just summarizing discussion that took place elsewhere. It's not my sentiment, and - even in the places I read it - I don't think it was intended as a slight on Marcy Walker (ex-Liza). My personal opinion, nothing to do with age, is that she's less right for Liza than she is for either Melanie or Hayley. As for playing a new character, I'm a little burned on that - I'd rather see characters with strong connections, especially to core families. ~Soaker
  • I agree - a recast Liza would be jarring with the original Tad/Greg/Jesse/Angie.
