Anger and hurt. Adam keeps putting down JR as a drunk even when he has shown syptoms of something seriously wrong. Adam immediately assumed JR shaved off his hair in a drunken state, never even imagining something else could be wrong. First thing most people would have thought of is cancer. So JR is letting Adam hang himself. Maybe he's hoping that when Adam finally does find out--perhaps even at JR's funeral--Ádam will feel great remorse and guilt and it will be too late. Revenge. Adam is going to be feeling quite enough remorse and guilt when he finds out he killed Stuart, so he won't have any emotions left for JR yet again. JR could die in the middle of all this and Adam might not even notice. Still, JR wants his father's approval so badly, he needs to take the chance and just tell him, and take the chance Adam will come through for him and give him the love and support he needs so much right now. Adam probably would. But JR won't take that risk, he's been hurt by Adam's scorn andturning to Scott and Annie too much. That's my take.
I think JR is doing an outstanding job on this cancer storyline and I'm sorry I doubted he would. The complex and conflicting emotions of someone who faces a deadly illness are coming through loud and clear. His reaction to his helplessness and dependence on Marissa yesterday were very well played. However Adam is going to leave AMC, I hope it takes long enough for him to find out he's been so wrong about JR.
