Topic: Did we really have to de-age Adam 7 years

Topic Posted by: LDB

Additional Comments: According to Stuart's gravesite, he was born in 1945.  David Canary was born in 1938.  No big deal., really  But, SORASing I understand; even SOYS (soap opera youth syndrome).  We have to believe Erica is younger than she is, etc.  But what was the point of de-aging Adam?  It seems a waste of writing to bother with such trivia when it could be spent on better storylines -- when it doesn't really matter.  Does it?

David Canary and Adam Chandler are two different persons as are Susan Lucci and Erica Kane.  The characters do NOT have to be the same ages as the actors.  And they are not in the case of AMC for a few characters/actors.  It happens all the time not only in Soap Operas but also in other acting medium, that is what ACTING is all about.

I don’t know where many Soap fans get the idea that because an actor is a certain age he/she MUST portray that same age in his/her character.  Here is a relatable example, in Lawrence’s Oliver’s film Hamlet, Eileen Herlie (Myrtle Fargate) played a woman older than her age.  Herlie played the mother of Olivier’s Hamlet when she was younger than Oliver.

Erica was 21 or 22 when she entered the program, but they had her as a 17 year old teenager...they made her 4 or 5 years younger, so what is the big deal about making Adam 7 years younger?????

  • Oh, not a big deal at all. It just boggles my mind that such a brief attention is given to such minutiae when there are holes so big in major story lines enough to fill the Pine Valley Easter Sunday cemetery.
  • I still say the holes in stories are due to the pending loss of key characters...trying to write them out and then connect it all again when production starts in LA....that's my hope..ITA they're making a mess of it and it's hard to believe the producers and writers can stay employed with this garbage...what's really interesting to me is that the actors have to speak these lines...I think TK is totally disgusted with what he's being given...I don't blame him at all! It's AWFUL! Tad gets garbage too and MEK makes the best of it...but geez...that whole lightbulb joke thing a few months ago....omg!.SORAS
  • I'm with you SORAS. I cannot believe what they've done with MEK, Thorsten and Darnell. Ruining characters. Thank GOD they're all fine actors making lemonade. Sour lemonade but still. I also agree the holes are because some who are not going may have their pink slips already and they're scrambling to make story without them PLUS they have to be right in the middle of the move. Let's see what happens next year after the big 40th anniversary. eom/WE

I was thinking maybe they made him younger so that it would be that much less of an age difference with his young bride to be...

I was really surprised they deSOARSed Adam by that much. I could see it if they portrayed Adam as a young, fit, 62 year old. However, that isn't the case. He is portrayed more like a man in his 70's with the usual health problems that go along with aging.

  • Better they should concentrate on storylines!! /LDB
  • but Adam is a portrayal of a man who has the health issues that might plague an A-type personality like Adam...he stresses, he gets angry pretty fast and often, he tries to control everything, his company has gone up and down in its fortunes, his family..always an issue for him, women...he finds a love and then it ends..many times...we don't see Adam going for a swim in his pool...or playing golf to relax...or out on a boat on the Pennsylvania Ocean...remember how Stuart would constantly ask him about making time for their annual fishing trip...and a couple times Adam never did it..too busy! And Stuart would warn him...it's not good for you, Adam....so to ME his health woes are more those of a guy who doesn't relax much...who drinks a fair amount...and if you're in your 60's and doing that, unless you have exceptional genes...you're going to suffer all sorts of ills. So I don't see him portrayed as a guy in his 70's..and guys in their 70's are vital as well...I mean look at DC in REAL LIFE...he's got it going on...no I think the portrayal of Adam is correct...this is what the man could expect...and THINK how many times people are pulling guns on each other in his life! And his own heart doctor snuck terrible drugs into him...and then a few months later Zach and Ryan get the same drugs off that doctor and poison Adam with them again...holy cow...how SHOULD he look?! LOL....I mean he does NOT live a normally amount of stress life! SORAS

This has nothing to do with the age of David Canary and only has to do with the intended age of Adam and Stuart. Susan Lucci will be 62 this year...should we make Erica 62? (some bios say she was born in 1947, some 1946, some 1948...I just go with 1947).

Yes, David Canary is a Silver Fox and I'd be thrilled for a man like that! Yes, Susan Lucci is gorgeous...forget about work she's had done or not had done...she is naturally beautiful and believe me, you don't get to that age as a woman without loss of something...you go through menopause, your body changes, your skin changes, your hair changes, your BRAIN changes, your ENERGY changes...so she, too, is quite the fox.

But they are playing characters and those characters have intended ages...although Erica's remains pretty stagnant longer than the other characters' ages do! LOL....

  • True enough. Age on a soap is irrelevant. Sometimes it seems irrelevant to change it. Were Adam and Erica ever perceived as the same age?? /LDB
  • SORAS-well stated. Best I've heard :) shebee
  • TY shebee :) SORAS
  • No, LDB...Erica is in her 40's..floating there endlessly...and Adam we (now) know is 64 SORAS
  • pretty soon Erica's children will be older than her if we are to believe she's still in her 40's. Even Babe died around 25, so Ryan has to be almost 35-40 now. - kris

I guess there's something about 70. David Canary is one fine looking man. He is slim and has wonderful facial features. However, I feel that he does look his age, that there is no way he could pass for 64, but that his longevity should be celebrated, not lied about.

    Replies: (list all replies)

  • Oh, so true!! He is one fine looking man. I'm 63 and I'll take him in a heartbeat!! /LDB!
  • if every actor had to play only his or her age, there'd be real problems in TV and film and theatre...it's not a lie...I mean that David Canary is a guy like Adam Chandler...is a lie...that MEK is a guy like Tad..particularly when he was a cad..is a lie..he's a very quiet, shy guy...that Melissa what's her name is a person like Annie...I assume that's a lie! LOL....okay Susan Lucci is the closest to her character...in terms of glamor and all that BUT everyone says and knows there's not a nicer woman in all of soapdom than Susan Lucci....and is Vincent Irizarry a bad guy? I think not..he has lots of charity work he does and is quite the family man...I mean it's all a lie so to speak..if it were all TRUE I wouldn't bother to watch for 31 years..I have enough truth in my life! I need some fantasy....SORAS
  • Mega KUDOS to Bonnie's message. Well Said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! eom Suds
